introduction
aerospace & defence
with nearly 40 years experience providing innovative photonics solutions,
marl is acknowledged as one of the pioneers of the led industry. during this
time the marl brand has become synonymous with a global reputation for
quality, backed up with first class technical support and supply logistics.
customers can choose logic and status indicators from thousands of
variants; marl have now supplied more than 100 million pcb leds! some of
the world’s first electronic light bulbs were made by marl in the 1980s and
today these are still enhancing the operational performance and reliability
of the host equipment in countless defence and aerospace applications. our
manufacturing division offers a wide range of high performance ingress
protected panel indicator lamps which are ideal for applications demanding
a combination of high performance, high reliability and outstanding value
for money.
because of the in-house capability for rapid proto-typing, environmental
test and scope of supply, (small, medium and high volume), we also
welcome enquiries for custom projects for applications requiring indication
or illumination. at marl, being able to meet specification is taken for
granted, what we offer stretches the barriers in order to meet and exceed
client need and expectation.
the highly experienced marl team includes optosource, (the component and
accessory distribution division), which provides customers with access to
some of the best emerging light engine technology in the world, which
enables our clients to stay ahead of their competition. other elements of
added value service include stock deliveries for components; short lead
times for products made to order and managed obsolescence programmes
against competitors who can’t stay the distance. customers keep on
returning to marl because they like the breadth and depth of design and
manufacturing expertise and our flexible approach!
leds will probably become the light sources of choice for man machine
status indicator interfaces and most applications requiring illumination for
most of the 21st century; estimates suggest that 19% of current global
energy is required for artificial light and that leds might potentially reduce
energy requirement by 50% by 2020! enquiries for ruggedised energy
saving products and systems are particularly welcome. for example; ‘cool
white’ led lighting, (4000k to 5000k), works well for security and perimeter
lighting for direct viewing, or integration with cctv.
marl brings unrivalled knowledge of led technology to the science and art of
lighting. all activities are supported by appropriate international
accreditation, quality and environmental standards; BS EN ISO 9001:2008

marl business park - centre of marl’s design and manufacture
leds and economics
long lifetime characteristics of solid-state led technology ensure very high orders
of reliability compared with conventional light sources. this reduces ongoing
maintenance costs, which are further enhanced by the failure mode of leds which
tend to degrade over long periods of time, compared with the catastrophic failure
mode associated with conventional light sources. as performance and led usage
increases, the business case for adoption to led technology is constantly
improving and in many cases if the total through life costs are evaluated and
included, the case can be compelling.
leds and legislation
governments have passed measures to phase out incandescent light bulbs. in
some jurisdictions this has been through legislation, while in others through
voluntary measures. the aim is to encourage use of more energy efficient lighting
alternatives, such as compact fluorescent lamps (cfls) and led lamps. this
legislation is to be imposed in the uk from 2011 onwards.
leds and society
the man machine interface has been evolving since the industrial revolution and
during the past three decades leds have become an integral part of the control
system environment for a wide range of applications, from power stations, to
aircraft, cars and brown and white goods. additionally, because of the potential for
‘intelligent’ electronic control leds can potentially offer many enhancements to the
built environment and provide ‘healthy’ lighting.
leds and technology
the performance characteristics in terms of efficiency and consistency are
constantly improving. however, this trend also applies to other components such
as thermal management, electronic driver systems, secondary optics and
reflectors. this means that the total system efficiency of led based indicator and
illuminator systems is also constantly improving.
led filament replacements
designed to allow ‘fit and forget’ replacement of the less reliable filament bulb,
both for new equipment and retro-fit applications. available in single chip and
multi-led cluster which all provide high intensity, effective illumination of most
types of lens assemblies in illuminated push button switches and lamp
holders. incandescent replacements are manufactured in all the popular lamp
base styles and can be operated from a wide range of voltage options with
true bi-polar termination for low voltage dc applications. outstanding
reliability, improved optical matching and colour perception translates into
tangible customer benefits in terms of saving in maintenance time and
replacement costs. typical applications include control instrumentation,
professional illuminated switches, and display illumination.
professional led panel indicators
the ultimate range of indicators which are available in a wide range of
mounting diameters and combine features such as ingress protection,
sunlight readability with outstanding orders of operational performance and
reliability. other options include internal limiting resistors, test facility, true low
voltage dc bi-polar termination, burn-in and flame retardant flying leads. high
performance panel indicator lamps have been specifically designed for
installation in all categories of climatic and hazardous environments and meet
all the criteria expected of product capable of providing high intensity
indication for long duration in the most demanding professional and military
related applications.
led illumination solutions
leds provide an energy efficient, mercury free alternative to traditional lighting
helping to preserve the environment, while delivering more flexible and longer
lasting lighting solutions. high brightness led products from marl combine
awesome power and aesthetic appeal to facilitate effects, delivering reliable
light to field, below decks lighting, site security, platform and general military
lighting applications.
bespoke design capability
customers come back to marl because of the scope, (depth and breadth), of
the design and manufacturing capability. the company makes high quality
products which work, last the test of time and are supported by professional,
first class customer service. this translates into a unique ability to offer a very
rapid and flexible response to meet and hopefully exceed customer
expectations when needed. and these skill sets are ideally suited to
semi-custom and special projects. marl can turn your vision into signature
luminaires for any project. either by working to your detailed design or
developing your concept through sketches or utilising the latest modelling
software. specialised resources are at your finger tips...so why not get
creative!
