Film Chip Capacitor Special Precautions
Soldering and Washing Guidelines
1. Use only flux and cream solders iwth a halogen content of 0.1% or less (by weight).
2. Parts supplied in special moisture resistant packaging should be soldered within 72 hours of breaking the packaging seal and stored during that time at +25°C and <70% relative humidity.
3. Since surface mount film chip capacitors do not have a protective coating care should be exercised when subjecting them to ultrasonic cleaning (durations up to 5 minutes at temperatures up to +50°c) or high pressure spray
washing. Test the method of cleaning to insure that peeling of the top film layer and/or electrode separation does not
occur.
4. Some of the acceptable cleaning agents are Ethanol, Isoproyl Alcohol, Ashahi Clean AK-225AES, HCFC141b-MS,
P3 Cold Cleaner 225S, FRW-17, FRW-1N and FRW-100. Contact NIC regarding usage of other types of cleaning
solvents.
5. Water washing using de-ioned water is possible, although care must be taken to eliminate moisture that may have
penetrated the part. Experimentation underf actual production cleaning and drying conditions is highly suggested.
The de-ioned water should be free of detergents and chemicals. Drying should be performed for 30 minutes a +85°C.
Visual Inspection Guidelines
Surface mount film chip capacitors are high performance stacked film components and as such can present some
unique cosmetic appearance related issues. The following are post soldering visual inspection guidelines.
1. NORMAL IRREGULARITIES:
a. Minor delamination: <30% of top cover layer of protective film (see figure 1)
