DC/DC Power Converters
PAIRUI's DC/DC converter line ranges from 1W to 200W for
encapsulated modules, 30W to 700W for standard bricks,
and 2A to 16A point of load converter modules. This line
offers a diverse selection of input and output options,

Input Voltage Range
The high and low input voltage limits within
which a power supply or DC/DC converter may
be operated. A common specification for
DC/DC converters is to specify the ratio of high
line to low line (i.e. a range of 2:1 for 18VDC
to 36VDC or a range of 4:1 for 18VDC to
72VDC).
PI Filter
A commonly used filter at the input of a DC/DC
converter, connected before and after a series
inductor to reduce reflected ripple current. The
filter usually consists of two parallel capacitors
and a series inductance.

Output Voltage Accuracy
The maximum allowed deviation of the DC
output of a power supply or DC/DC converter
from its ideal or nominal value. Expressed as a
percentage of output voltage. Often called
output voltage tolerance.
Line Regulations
The variation of an output voltage due to a
change in the input voltage, with all other factors held constant. Line regulation is expressed
as the maximum percentage change in output
voltage as the input voltage varied over its
specified range.
Load Regulation
Variation of the output voltage due to a change
in the output’ s load within a specified range
with all other factors held constant. The load
change may be specified for other than no load
to full load such as 20 % load to full load or 10
% load to 90 % load and it is expressed as a
percentage of the nominal DC output voltage.
Efficiency
The ratio of output load power consumption to
input power consumption expressed as a percentage. Normally measured at full rated
output power and nominal input voltage.
Switching Frequency
The rate at which the DC voltage is switched in
a DC-DC converter or switching power supply.
The ripple frequency is double the switching
frequency in push-pull designs.

Transient Recovery Time
The magnitude of AC voltage on the output of
DC/DC converter, expressed in millivolts peakto-peak or RMS, at a specified band width
(typically 20MHz). This is the result of the feed
through of the rectified line frequency, internal
switching transients and other random noise
The time required for the output voltage of a
power supply or DC/DC converter to settle
within specified output accuracy limits following
a step change in output load current or a step
change in input voltage.
Storage Temperature Range
The range of ambient temperatures within a
power supply at non-operating condition, with
no degradation in its subsequent operation.

Current Limiting
Output current is limited to prevent damage of
the converter at overload situations. If the
output is shorted, the output voltage is regulated down so the current from the outputs
cannot be excessive.
Isolation
The electrical separation between the input and
output of a converter, (consisting of resistive
and capacitive isolation) normally determined
by transformer characteristics and circuit spacing.
Ambient Temperature
The temperature of still air immediately surrounding a power supply or converter. The temperature measurement should be made about
100 mm (4 inch) from the body of the converter or underneath of the power supply.
Operating Temperature Range
The range of ambient or case temperature
within a power supply at which it operates
safely and meets its specifications.

A protection system for power supplies or
DC/DC converters where the power supply or
DC/DC converter is deliberately shut down if
the input voltage drops below a pre-defined
level. Some hysteresis is usually present to
prevent the power supply or DC/DC converter
oscillating on and off. Under voltage lockout is
usually needed with battery systems where the
voltage decreases gradually with the time
rather than snaps off quickly.
Thermal Shutdown
Extended operation at excessive temperature
will initiate over temperature shutdown triggered by a temperature sensor inside the PWM
controller. This operates similarly to overcurrent
and short circuit mode. The inception point of
the over temperature condition depends on the
average power delivered, the ambient temperature and the extent of forced cooling airflow.
Remote Sensing
A method of moving the measuring point for
the regulation from the output terminals to the
load. Compensates voltage drops in the power
distribution bus, but negative impact on
dynamic load behavior must be tolerated.
Application Considerations
Start Up Considerations
When power is first applied to the DC-DC converter, there is some risk of startup difficulties
if you do not have both low AC and DC impedance and adequate regulation of the input
source. Make sure that your source supply
does not allow the instantaneous input voltage
to go below the minimum voltage at all times.
Use a moderate size capacitor very close to the
input terminals. You may need two or more
parallel capacitors. A larger electrolytic or ceramic cap supplies the surge current and a
smaller parallel low-ESR ceramic cap gives low
AC impedance.
Remember that the input current is carried
both by the wiring and the ground plane return.
Make sure the ground plane uses adequate
thickness copper. Run additional bus wire if
necessary.
Input Fusing
Certain applications and/or safety agencies
may require fuses at the inputs of power conversion components. Fuses should also be
used when there is the possibility of sustained
input voltage reversal which is not currentlimited. For greatest safety, we recommend a
fast blow fuse installed in the ungrounded input
supply line
Output Fusing
Most of our bricks are extensively protected
against current, voltage and temperature
extremes. However your output application circuit may need additional protection. In the
extremely unlikely event of output circuit failure, excessive voltage could be applied to your
circuit. Consider using an appropriate fuse in
series with the output.
Input Filtering
The user must assure that the input source has
low AC impedance to provide dynamic stability
and that the input supply has little or no inductive content, including long distributed wiring to
a remote power supply. The converter will oper-
ate with no additional external capacitance if
these conditions are met.
For best performance, we recommend installing
a low-ESR capacitor immediately adjacent to
the converter’ s input terminals. The capacitor
should be a ceramic type or a polymer type.
Make sure that the input terminals do not go
below the under voltage shutdown voltage at all
times. More input bulk capacitance may be
added in parallel (either electrolytic or tantalum) if needed.

Output Filtering
The converter will achieve its rated output
ripple and noise with no additional external capacitor. However, the user may install more
external output capacitance to reduce the
ripple even further or for improved dynamic
response. Again, use low-ESR ceramic or polymer capacitors. Mount these close to the converter. Measure the output ripple under your
load conditions.
Use only as much capacitance as required to
achieve your ripple and noise objectives. Excessive capacitance can make step load recovery
sluggish or possibly introduce instability. Do not
exceed the maximum rated output capacitance
listed in the datasheets.
Maximum Output Capacitance
A simple method of reducing the output ripple
is simply to add a large external capacitor. This
can be a low cost alternative to the LC filter
approach, although not as effective. There is,
however, also the possibility of causing startup
problems, if the output capacitance is too
large.
With a large output capacitance at switch on,
there is no charge on the capacitors and the
DC-DC converter immediately experiences a
large current demand at its output. The inrush
current can be so large as to exceed the ability
of the DC-DC converter, and the device can go
into current limit.

For converters with a constant power limit, the
effect of a large capacitive load is to make the
output voltage slowly ramp up over time. However, for converters with a hiccup protected
output, the device could continuously oscillate
as it tries to start, goes into overload shutdown
and then retries again. The DC-DC converter
may not survive if this condition persists.
For unregulated converters, the overload condition caused by the capacitor charging current
could damage the converter. If instead of single
capacitors on outputs an RC-filter or LC-Filter
is used, the maximum capacitive load can be
higher because the resistor/choke reduces the
capacitor inrush current peak. However, fairly
large resistors or inductances are required to
have a meaningful effect.
Overload Protection

Although the use of filtering will prevent excessive current at power-on under normal operating conditions, many of the lower cost converters have no protection against an output circuit
taking excessive power or even going shortcircuit. When this happens, the DC-DC connverter will take a large input current to try to
supply the output. Eventually the converter will
overheat and destroy itself if this condition is
not rectified.
There are several ways to prevent overload at
the outputs destroying the DC-DC converter.
The simplest being a straight forward fuse (also
refer to Input Fusing).
Sufficient tolerance for inrush current is
required to ensure the fuse does not blow on
power-on. Another simple scheme that can be
applied is a circuit breaker.
There are several other current limiting techniques that can be used to detect an overload
situation, the suitability of these is left to the
designer. The most important thing to consider
is how this information will be used. If the
system needs to signal to a controller the location or module causing the overload, some
form of intelligence will be needed. If the
device simply needs to switch off, a simple
fuse type arrangement will be adequate.
Wide input range regulated converters offer
overload protection / short circuit protection via
an internal circuit that interferes with the primary oscillator so the switching is regulated
back in situations of overload or output short
circuit.
Output Short-circuit Protection (SCP)
Most of unregulated DC/DC converters with
RCC topology do not have built-in short circuit
protection while in certain applications external
short circuit protection may be necessary.

Input Under Voltage Protection (UVP)
When the input voltage drops, or is momentarily removed, the output circuit would suffer
similar voltage drops. For short period input
voltage drops, such as when other connected
circuits have an instantaneous current
demand, or devices are plugged in or removed
from the supply rail, a simple circuit as follows
can prevent the output circuit from being
effected.

No Load Operation
Unregulated DC-DC converters are expected to
be under a minimum of 10% load, hence below
this load level the output voltage is undefined.
In certain circuits this could be a potential
problem.
The easiest way to ensure the output voltage
remains within a specified tolerance, is to add
external resistors, so that there is always a
minimum 10% loading on the device. This is
rather inefficient in that 10% of the power is
always being taken by this load, hence only
90% is available to the additional circuitry.
Zener diodes on the output are another simple
method. It is recommended that these be used
with a series resistor or inductor, as when the
Zener action occurs, a large current surge may
induce signal noise into the system.
