1 Introduction
1.1 SyncMOS ISP Writer supports External ISP and allows users to easily program a code
into SM59DXX Series and SM59RXX Series without having to program the ISP Service
CODE into Target IC. The product also supports SM59DXX Series Internal ISP.
1.2 Supportable interfaces: USB, RS232。
1.3 Supportable voltage for MCU Programming: 5V, 3.3V (select from ISP Writer Jump J8)
1.4 Support MCUs: SM59DXX Series and SM59RXX Series(Select from ISP Writer Jump J1,
J2, and J3)
1.5 SyncMOS ISP Writer is powered via a USB cable. No external DC 5V power source is
required.
1.6 SM59RXX Series requires 64 Pin TQFP to 40 pin DIP adaptor (part No. SAB0001A.
Please refer to article 7 SM59RXX Series Adaptor (SAB0001A) for details on the adaptor.)
2 ISP Writer Accessories:
2.1 ISP Writer mainboard: part No. SWR0002B-0。
2.2 USB cable: part No. SAC1004A-0。
2.3 64 Pin TQFP to 40 pin DIP adaptor (optional): part No. SAB0001A-0. This adaptor is
required for SM59RXX Series.

4 Hardware Settings for ISP Writer:
4.1 Connect ISP Writer to DC 5V power supply [the inner side end of DC connector is
positive (+) and the outer side is negative (-).] or use the USB cable as the power source
by switching the to USB POWER as shown below.

4.2 Adjust VCC voltage of the MCU to be programmed(JUMP J8 on the ISP Writer
mainboard). For example:
SM59DXX SeriesC25 or SM59RXX SeriesC25 C stands for operation voltage 5V
SM59DXX SeriesL25 or SM59RXX SeriesL25 L stands for operation voltage 3.3V

4.3 If you want to program SM59DXX Series, adjust J1, J2, and J3 on ISP Writer. See the
picture below.

4.4 If you want to program SM59RXX Series, adjust J1, J2, and J3 of ISP Writer as shown
below. Since SM59RXX Series is in a 64-pin TQFP package, the programming needs a
64-Pin TQFP to 40-pin DIP adaptor. (part No.: SAB0001A. Please refer to Article 7
SM59RXX Series adaptor (SAB0001A) for details on the adaptor.)

4.5 Select the interface with the PC: When using COM PORT interface, connect the DC 5V
power supply. Turn the power on and the power indicator light will be on. If you use the
USB interface, the USB power indicator light will also be on when the power supply is ok.
When the power is on, the power indicator light will be on.

5 SyncMOS EWAP V2.2 Operation Instructions:
5.1 Install SyncMOS EWAP V2.2 (Eng) Setup.exe on your computer. After successful
installation, a shortcut icon will appear on the desktop.
5.2 Double click EWAP_V2.2 and the EWAP window pops up.

5.3 After the EWAP window appears, do the following:
5.3.1 Select Program Method:
a. Select the MCU type on the chip (SM59DXX Series or SM59RXX Series). Select
On-line Record or Off-line Record.
b. Select Internal ISP (it is available only when the IC has had an ISP service code
inside (the path is “C:\Program Files\SyncMOS\SyncMOS
Writers\EWAP\ISP\ISP16K_EWAP_V1.hex) or an External ISP (SM59RXX Series
only supports External ISP.).

c. When using Internal ISP, it is required to set the frequency. The default value is
22.1184MHz/12T. (You don’t have to select if you use an External ISP.)
d. Select MCU on Socket or MCU on the target board. (If you select Off-line Record,
skip the part.)
5.3.2 Scan COM Port:
a. Select the COM PORT (COM1 or COM2), and press “Scan” to automatically
connect ISP WRITER and the COM PORT of the PC.(If you select off-line record,
you only have to select the COM PORT and don’t have to perform scanning.)
b. When COM PORT is located and connected. The message【COM2 Connect
Success!】will appear and the software interface indicator light will flash green.
(This varies with the PC’s COM1 or COM2)
c. If you use USB for connection, when you open EWAP, COM4(Prolific
USB-to-Serial Com Port)will appear in the SCAN COM port. Press “Scan” to
connect.

d. When the COM Port cannot be located, the message【Please check COM port】
will appear, which means the USB cannot be found between COM1 and COM32,
or the external ISP writer is not powered. Place COM Port at between COM1 and
COM32 and check whether the power indicator light is on. Concerning the setting
of COM Port, please refer to Point 6 How to Modify the Location of COM Port.
5.3.3 Select Program File:
a. Click Select and Load window will pop up. Click Open to select source file
(XXX.HEX or XXX.BIN).
b. SM59DXX Series has a maximum ROM size of 16K(SM59D04G2)and SM59RXX
Series has a maximum ROM size of 64K(SM59R16A2). When the CODE SIZE
exceeds the maximum, the message window will pop up: Over the MCU program
memory size.

5.3.4 Configuration: select the items you intend to set. This function is only available on an
External ISP.
a. ISP Block (N): this is used to set the size of the ISP protection area.(The function
is only available in SM59DXX Series.)
b. Watch Dog: select the WDTM parameter in the “watch dog” function. (The
function is available in SM59DXX Series and SM59RXX Series.)
c. MCU speed: when using SM59DXX Series, you can either select the 6T mode or
the 12T mode. When using SM59RXX Series, you can select to use the built-in
frequency or external frequency.
d. BOR: BOR stands for “Brown Out Reset.” When the Vcc voltage is too low,
automatic reset will begin to work.(The function is only available in SM59DXX
Series.)
5.3.5 Record:
a. Chip Erase: click “Chip Erase” and all of the code on Target IC will be deleted.
b. Blank Check: click “Blank Check” to check if the code on Target IC is “FF”.
c. Program: click “Program” to program the code loaded and functions set into
Target IC.
d. Verify: click “Verify” to check the accuracy of the code programmed to the IC.
e. Protect: click “Protect” to encrypt the code on Target IC so that the code cannot
be read by using the “READ” function. (All of the SM59DXX Series Protect codes
will be read as “00” and that of the SM59RXX Series Protect will be read as “FF”.)
f. Autorun: click the tasks you want to perform, such as Chip Erase, Program, and
so on. Click Autorun to perform the tasks chosen. When the recording task is
completed, a message will be displayed: Autorun Success!

5.3.6 Buffer Data: click Read MCU and the values read will be displayed. Press “Clear
Window” to clear the window.
6 How to Modify the Location of Com Port:
6.1 Click My Computer. Then, on an empty area of the My Computer Window that pops up,
right click and select Properties. The following window appears.

Click Hardware, select Device Manager, and the following pops up.
6.3 Select Port (COM and LPT). Click the COM PORT that is to be modified. Right-click and
select Properties and the following page is displayed.

Click Advanced and the following page pops up.
6.5 Select the COM PORT (from COM1 to COM32) you want to set and press “Ok.” Click
“Scan for Hardware Changes” to initiate the COM PORT you’ve just selected.
7 SM59RXX Series adaptor (part No.: SAB0001A-0):
SAB0001A-0 is a 64 TQFP to 40 DIP adaptor, used by SM59RXX Series. The adaptor can be
used in the ISP Writer or SyncMOS Easy Writer(part No. : SWR0001A-0). See the following
pictures of the adaptor.

7.1 How to set SAB0001A-0 JUMP:
7.1.1 On the SAB0001A-0 adapter board are JUMP J3, J4, J5, and J6.
7.1.2 JUMP J6 is used to select the VCC voltage of SM59RXX Series.
7.1.3 When using this adapter board in ISP Writer(part No. : SWR0002A-0), it is required
to set JUMP J3, J4, and J5 into the ISP MODE as shown below.

7.1.4 When using this adapter board in Easy Writer(part No.: SWR0001A-0), set JUMP J3,
J4, and J5 to the Writer MODE as shown below.
Setting of the Writer MODE
7.1.5 To perform the recording task, the setting of the JUMP J6 VCC voltage must be the
same as that of the JUMP J8 VCC on the ISP Writer. That is, if you select 5V for ISP
Writer JUMP J8 voltage, you have to do the same for SAB0001A-0adapter board
JUMP J6.
7.2 The picture below shows how SAB0001A is placed on ISP Writer.

8 Off-line record:
8.1 Select the tasks you want to perform and click “Execute” to allow the ISP Writer record all
of the source code into its MCU. During the performing process, LED D2, D4, D6, and D8
will flash until the tasks are all finished. Then, the massage will pop up: Off-line Success!
8.2 Disconnect Com Port cable and press “SW1” button to perform off-line recording. During
the recording. LED D1, D2, D3 and D4 will flash orange until the task is finished. When
the LEDs D5, D6, D7, and D8 turn green, the off-line recording task is completed.

9 The target board Connection:
9.1 SM59DXX Series Internal ISP for MCU on the target board:
9.1.1 When connecting the Internal ISP to the target board, the ISP Writer needs to connect
the target board via Rx and Tx. Connect the target board Rx, Tx, and GND signals to
J14 on the ISP Writer.(VCC can use the independent source on the target board. If
there is no independent source available on the target board, the first pin VCC_OUT
of J4 can serve as the power supply.)
9.1.2 Connect P2.6, P2.7 to GND and press “Reset” button on the target board to allow
the target board's MCU to enter ISP Mode. Use EWAP software interface to perform
on-line recording or press “SW1” button on ISP Writer to perform off-line recording.
9.2 SM59DXX Series External ISP for MCU on the target board:
9.2.1 When connecting External ISP with the target board, the ISP Writer need to connect
Data, Trig.,Clk_out and GND on J4 with P1.0, P1.1, P1.2 on the target board and
GND.(VCC can use the independent source on the target board. If there is no
independent source available on the target board, the first pin VCC_OUT of J4 can
serve as the power supply.)

9.2.2 Press “SW6” button on ISP Writer, and D1 to D8 LEDs will begin to flash. Press “ISP
Connect” on the EWAP window. A message window will pop up.
9.2.3 Press “Reset” button of the target board, and press “OK” on the message window to
connect the External ISP. Use EWAP software interface for the on-line recording task.
(If you use SM59RXX Series, which has no “ISP Connect” button on the software
interface, press "SW6” button on the ISP Writer, and then press "Reset” button on the
target board to enter the ISP Mode.)
9.2.4 To perform off-line recording, press "SW6” button on the ISP Writer and then press
Reset” button on the target board to allow MCU to enter the ISP Mode Press “SW1”
button on the ISP Writer and you can perform recording.

9.3 SM59RXX Series External ISP for MCU on the target board:
9.3.1 When connecting the External ISP to the target board, connect Trigger to
ICE_ISP_TRIGOUT (on the 58th pin), and Data to ICE_ISP_DATA (on the 59th pin),
Clock to ICE_ISP_CLOCK (on the 60th pin). Connect the 58th, 59th, and 60th pins,
which are on the IC of the target board, and GND to J4 of the ISP Writer. (VCC can
use the independent source on the target board. If there is no independent source
available on the target board, the first pin VCC_OUT of J4 can serve as the power
supply.)
9.3.2 After the connection is ready, set the EWAP software interface. Then, you can
perform the recording task.
10 Update EWAP Firmware:
10.1 Connect ISP Writer and open SyncMOS EWAP V2.2. Use the default setting—In “1.
Select Program Method,” select “External ISP” and "MCU On Socket” in “Select Chip!”
Click “Scan” in “2. Scan COM Port.” If the connection is ok, a message will be displayed:
COM2 connect success
10.2 Press and hold “SW1” button on the ISP Writer, press and hold “SW2” (RESET) button,
then first release “SW2” (RESET) button before you release “SW1” button until all of the 8
LED lights off to allow SM59264 enter the Internal ISP mode.
10.3 Select “Firmware” and then “Update” on the EWAP box. The massage then pops up: This
process will change firmware.
10.4 Click OK and select C:\Program Files\SyncMOS\SyncMOS Writers\EWAP\FW\ MSM9055
V21.hex.

10.5 AutoRun Success! means successful update.
11 Special Notes:
11.1 If you click Scan COM Port and can’t locate the COM PORT which connects to the PC,
reset the ISP Writer and then scan COM Port.
11.2 When CHIP ERASE does not work, try the following:
Check if the ISP Writer power is on,
Check if COM Port or USB Port is connected,
Check if the CHIP SELECT JUMP is correct,
Check VCC voltage, or
Press Reset button on ISP Writer.
