Power Module Based Solutions for UPS
Greater efficiency, smaller footprint, lower cost — UPS systems need to satisfy a whole new set of demands. Three-level
topologies such as NPC and MNPC, paired with higher switching frequencies, can help reduce passive components› size
and cost without compromising efficiency. What›s more, small add-ons to the circuit such as asymmetrical inductance can
also help boost efficiency without driving up costs.
3-level topologies:
Two different 3-level topologies are competing for the output inverter spot in UPS applications:
NPC 3-level inverter
Mixed voltage neutral clamped (MNPC) 3-level inverter
The NPC topology is able to operate exclusively with 650-V components, so higher switching frequencies are easily
achieved. The MNPC topology is superior when comes to static losses, overvoltage and fault-handling. Whereas NPC
circuits require a turn-off sequence to protect components against overvoltage in the event of a (fault) shutdown, this
is not necessary for MNPC circuits. The crossover (efficiency vs. PWM frequency) between the two topologies depends
largely on the components used. With state-of-the-art, 1200-V high-speed components for MNPC, the crossover is at
around 20 kHz, so MNPC topologies are superior up to 20 kHz.

The energy stored in the parasitic inductance (PFC DC capacitor and DC capacitor inverter) is transferred to the
onboard snubber capacitors.

The input and output snubber capacitors are connected.
■
A diode's reverse recovery current prevents the capacitor from discharging at turn-on.
■
The snubber›s stored energy is regenerated to the main DC voltage or used to charge the battery.

The benefits of a UPS topology with asymmetrical
inductance and regeneration
■
Parasitic inductance reduces the switch›s turn-on so no
external low-inductive DC connection is required.
■
The onboard capacitor takes on the stored energy
of the parasitic inductance at turn-off and, after reverse
recovery, of the BUCK diode during turn-on.
=> This reduces turn-off and turn-on losses.
■
The snubber›s stored energy is regenerated to the
main DC voltage or used to charge the battery.
