AMD Media SDK v1.0 Beta Release Notes

AMD Media SDK v1.0 Beta
Release Notes
1 Overview
The AMD Media SDK is a software package that provides high-level multimedia framework
components and libraries, allowing developers to leverage the AMD platform for media
processing.
The Media SDK v1.0 Beta release provides the following components.
• Media Foundation Transforms (MFTs) for video encoding and decoding.
• Video Quality (VQ) MFT for video pre- and post-processing.
• AMF-DEM library for low-latency video capture and encode.
• Transcoding with support for Scalable Video Coding (SVC).
• Optimized sample applications for targeted use cases.
2 OS Support
AMD Media SDK v1.0 Beta supports the following platforms.
• Microsoft® Windows® 7 (32- and 64-bit).
• Microsoft® Windows® 8 (32- and 64-bit).
The AMD MFTs can be leveraged in Windows 8 Store applications.
3 Device Support
AMD Media SDK v1.0 Beta supports the following devices.
• Kabini, Temash, and Richland APUs
• Cape Verde, Tahiti, and Bonaire discrete GPUs
The following table lists the supported architectures and validated platforms for individual
samples. SI stands for the Southern Islands family of devices. NI stands for the Northern Islands
family of devices.

4 Dependencies
AMD Media SDK v1.0 Beta requires the following software components and tools.
• AMD Catalyst Driver version 13.9 or later.
• Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2010 or later.
5 Known Issues and Limitations
• The VQ MFT is supported only on Southern Islands (SI) and later GPU families.
• In transcode or video edit samples, if the input file was generated using VLC, the "ASF writer"
skips writing frames.
• When using the DEM library, the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"
message is sometimes displayed on certain dGPUs.
• In the sample code for decoding the MPEG4 stream, the Microsoft MPEG4 decoder is used
for resolutions below 720p; the UVD hardware decoder is used for higher resolutions.
• On Windows 7 for NI and Tahiti, VC1 and WMV streams use the software decoder.
• The PlaybackVQ Desktop sample shows artifacts when executed on the CapeVerde dGPU.
• Executing MPEG4 1080p streams for the transcodeVQ Desktop sample on NI platform is not
supported because the AMD MPEG4 Decoder cannot directly connect to the AMD Encoder
for MPEG4 1080p streams.
• The Video Quality (VQ) filter is not supported on Crossfire multi-GPUs.
• The DEM Screen Capture sample does not work on the APU + dGPU configuration when the
monitor is connected to the APU.
• Steady video for lower resolutions might not be played back in real-time because the CPU
clock could get reduced as a result of the PC power settings.
