Introduction
Welcome to the EM application note for Multi-vendor Chip-based Serialization (MCS) using EM Gen2 devices.
The Serialized Global Trade Item Number (SGTIN) is the RFID equivalent to a product barcode with the addition of a unique
serial number for the product. The most common form of SGTIN uses numeric serialization and is represented using the
SGTIN-96 encoding scheme.
Chip-based Serialization
Most Gen2 chips manufactured today contain a unique chip serial number included within the TID memory. The chip serial
number is written to TID memory during manufacturing and then permalocked to be made unalterable after delivery to
customers.
The concept for chip-based serialization is to use the unique TID information in a Gen2 chip to create a unique MCS serial
number regardless of the chip manufacturer. The length of the MCS serial number is 38 bits and corresponds to the length of a
serial number used for the SGTIN-96 encoding scheme. The 3 MSB’s of the MCS serial number are used for the MCS header
to identify the chip manufacturer. The remaining 35 bits are used to uniquely identify a Gen2 chip from the chip manufacturer
for all models of Gen2 chips that support MCS.
The MCS header values known to be in use so far are the following:

MCS Serial Number for EM Gen2 Chips
EM Gen2 chips are manufactured using several TID formats that comply with the EPCglobal Tag Data Standards. All formats
have the common fields for Allocation Class, Tag Mask Designer Identification (MDID), and Tag Model Number. The 12-bit
Tag Model Number is partitioned into three fields by EM to implement a 6-bit MCS Identifier, a 3-bit MCS Product number,
and a 3-bit Version number. Only EM chips having an MCS Identifier of ‘000010’ can support the generation of MCS serial
numbers. The full MCS serial number (MSB to LSB) is constructed as follows:
MCS serial number (38 bits) = MCS header (3 bits) + MCS Product (3 bits) + IC Serial Number (32 bits)

Pre-encoded EPC Memory for SGTIN-96 Encoding Scheme
EM Gen2 chips that support MCS also pre-encode a portion of the EPC memory during chip manufacturing. The EPC
memory is initialized to all zeroes and then programmed to support rapid encoding of an SGTIN-96 by setting the PC value for
6 words (96 bits) and setting the SGTIN-96 Serial Number to the MCS serial number. Use of the MCS serial number provided
by EM is optional. If a different serialization scheme is desired, then simply overwrite the MCS serial number in EPC memory
with another value.
