1. INTRODUCTION
The 4463-TCE30E915R-EK reference design is a complete 902‐928MHz AMR solution. This reference
design combines the RFMD RF6569 Front End Module (FEM) with the Silicon Labs Si446x Transceiver.
Silicon Laboratories’ Si446x devices are high-performance, low-current transceivers covering the sub-GHz
frequency bands from 119MHz to 1050MHz. The radios are part of the EZRadioPRO family, which includes
a complete line of transmitters, receivers, and transceivers, and covers a wide range of applications. All
parts offer outstanding sensitivity of -126 dBm while achieving extremely low active and standby current
consumption. The Si446x includes optimal phase noise, blocking, and selectivity performance for narrowband and licensed-band applications. The Si446x radio transceiver is housed in a 4.0mm x 4.0mm, QFN20 Pb-free package.
RFMD presents a world-class Front End Module (FEM) the RF6569 which provides a single TDD access for
Rx and Tx paths with the option of Rx differential port and share a common antenna port. The RF6569
provides 30dBm output power and incorporates harmonic filtering. The RF6569 is housed in a 5.5mm x
5.0mm, 28-pin LGA package.
This document will briefly describe the 4463-TCE30E915R-EK reference design and how it is setup and
configured for Engineering Evaluation of the RFMF RF6569 FEM and SiLabs Si446x transceiver.
Availability
The joint Silicon Labs and RFMD reference design kit files are available for download. The 4463TCE30E915R-EK test card based upon the reference design can be ordered by contacting a Silicon Labs
sales representative or authorized distributor.

For this guide, the 4463-TCE30E915R-EK reference design is evaluated using the Si4463-915-DK. The
Si4463-915-DK is interfaced to the host PC via the USB port. The 4463-TCE30E915R-EK reference design
and Si4463-915-DK are powered via the USB cable connected to the host PC.

3. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
1. Hardware and Software Requirements

Windows XP or later

Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 or later

Silicon Labs CP210x VCP driver

MCR v7.14 or later (Matlab compiler runtime for the modem calculator)

WDS v3.1.4.0 or later
The lack of the .NET framework and VCP driver are recognized during the WDS installation. The
install wizard will prompt for the installation of the missing components.
2. Download WDS
WDS can be obtained from the Silicon Labs website and is free of cost:
http://www.silabs.com/Support%20Documents/Software/WDS3-Setup.exe
As features are enhanced, device firmware updates may be needed. When WDS is installed it will
automatically prompt for a FW update if it detects an older version.
3. Installation Steps
Note: Before installing this software, local administration rights must be obtained from a network
administrator.
1. Insert the installation media or download the latest WDS release from the Silicon Labs web
site.
2. Double-click the WDS setup icon.
3. Follow the step-by-step instructions on the screen.
4. Click "Next" to start the installation process, or click "Cancel" to abort the installation and
close the installer package. Some screen images may differ slightly between software
revisions.

New installations of the WDS Chip Configurator may overwrite historical WDS data. Customers are advised

5. REFERENCE DESIGN TESTING
Before applying any power to the reference design it is highly recommended that the AN632 WDS user
guide is read in conjunction with the Si446x and RF6569 datasheet.
Below are screen images of what will be displayed once the 4463-TCE30E915R-EK reference design
board is connected properly and the WDS application is running. Also screen images of the various menu
options that configure the reference design board accordingly for transmit and receive testing are shown
below. If you have any additional questions please contact SiLabs.

Transmit Test setup
1. From the Configuration tab select the desired RF frequency to transmit and enter it in MHz.
2. From the Configuration tab select the TX radio bullet in the mode selection area
3. Connect the RF cable to the Antenna.
Note: At this point you are ready to transmit, for this application note the default settings are used
for a lot of these setting. Depending on your application you may need to adjust these setting to fit
your needs that why it is highly recommend that you also read the AN632 WDS user guide in
conjunction with the Si446x and RF6569 datasheet.

4. In the lower right corner click on the update button.

Note: At this time you should see a signal on the spectrum analyzer connected to the antenna and
if you have a power meter connected you should see a power level shown as well.
5. If you wish to adjust the input power to the RF6569 you can adjust the output of the Si446x by
adjusting the PA power level. Hit the update button after your adjustment to send the command to
the Si446x
6. To stop transmitting simply change the mode to Standby.

6. PACKET ERROR RATE TEST
There are two basic tests for the receiver. The first one is Bit Error Rate (BER) and the other is Packet Error
Rate (PER). Using WDS, it is possible to configure the Si446x transceiver in receive mode and output
received data and bit clock on two GPIOs. This can be used to measure BER with any signal generator with
a built in BER test. Note that the FEM does not include an LNA in the receive path but does have a balun.
Please refer to AN632 on the Silicon Labs website for details on WDS usage and the Si446x datasheet for
BER sensitivity at different data rates.

Packet Error Rate tests require specific test code to be run on a Silicon Labs MCU which computes and
provides accurate PER information on the LCD display of the motherboard. This code can be loaded onto
the motherboard using WDS. This will be released in a future version of the WDS release from Silicon Labs.
