Evaluation Board for the AAT1239-1 40 V Step-Up Converter
Introduction
The AAT1239-1 is a high frequency, high efficiency regulated current boost converter driving up to ten white LEDs in a
series connected configuration. The input voltage is 2.7V to 5.5V, which is ideal for portable devices powered by singlecell lithium-ion/polymer (Li-ion) batteries. With over-voltage protection and dynamically-programmable voltage control
via Skyworks' patented Simple Serial Control™ (S2Cwire™) interface, the AAT1239-1 is an ideal choice for wider diagonal monochrome or color TFT-LCD displays.
The AAT1239-1 evaluation board provides a platform for test and evaluation of the AAT1239-1 for white LED backlight
applications driving up to ten LEDs. The AAT1239-1 is programmable with the S2Cwire interface, using an onboard
microcontroller which is capable of brightening and dimming the LEDs in 16 discrete steps. The SELECT logic signal
from the microcontroller provides a stepped load from 1.5x to 3.0x of nominal output current, depending on the S2Cwire
data register (default = 3.0x).
This document describes the evaluation board and its accompanying user interface. In addition, a brief "Getting Started"
section is included to help the user begin operating the evaluation board. A schematic of the complete circuit is shown
in Figure 2. The board layout is also provided. For additional information, please refer to the AAT1239-1 product
datasheet.

Table 1 illustrates R2 value to set the over-voltage protection point when AAT1239-1 is used to drive 4~9 WLEDs.

Getting Started
The LED forward current is set by the resistor R1. The ballast resistor (R1) is preset to 30.1Ω on the evaluation board
for a maximum LED current to 20mA.

LED current accuracy is determined by VFB and R1. A 1% tolerance resistor is recommended to achieve optimum accuracy. Over-voltage protection is set to the maximum operation voltage (38.6V) to protect the IC from damage and is
a function of the number of series-connected WLEDs used in the application.
There are three (3) press buttons on the evaluation board (S1-S3). The modes of operation are detailed in Table 2.
Each button controls a particular function.
· S1 (Up) button: The S1 (Up) button increments the number of EN edges and decrease the FB pin voltage according
to Table 2. By holding down the Up button for more than 1.5 seconds, the microcontroller enters auto-increment
mode.
· S2 (Down) button: The S2 (Down) button decrements the number of EN edges and increases the FB pin voltage
according to Table 2. By holding down the Down button for more than 1.5 seconds, the microcontroller enters autodecrement mode.
· S3 (Select) button: The S3 (Select) button toggles High/Low on the SEL pin. A green LED (D11) indicates the status
on the SEL pin. If the green LED turns ON, the SEL pin is set to High. If the green LED turns off, the SEL pin is set
to Low. Figure 3 details the LED nominal current levels for SEL=High and SEL=Low settings with R1=30.1Ω.

Upon initial power-up and prior to S2Cwire programming, the default FB pin voltage is set at 0.6V/0.4V depending on
the SEL pin logic level. The illumination of the green LED (D11) signifies that the SEL pin is high. The red LED (D12)
should illuminate, indicating that power has been connected to the evaluation board.

Layout
1. The power traces, including the GND trace, the SW trace and the VIN trace should be kept short, direct and wide
to accommodate high current flow.
2. Connect the input capacitor C1 to the VIN pin as closely as possible to optimize power filtering effects.
3. Keep the switching node, SW, away from the sensitive FB node.
