HV816DB3
High Brightness 16.5in2
EL Lamp Driver Demoboard
General Description
The Supertex HV816DB3 is a demoboard designed for high
power applications using the HV816 4x4 QFN-16 package.
The HV816DB3 board has the circuitry to drive a 16.5in2 EL
lamp. For applications requiring smaller lamps and/or lower
power, please refer to the HV816DB2 demoboard datasheet.
Simply connect the board to a power supply and an EL lamp
as shown in the Connection Diagram below. The HV816DB3
circuit has been optimized to drive an EL lamp size of
16.5in2. For lower power applications requiring different EL
frequencies or smaller EL lamps sizes, the demoboard can
be re-optimized by changing some of the component values.
It should be noted that the maximum power dissipation for
the device on the HV816DB3 is limited to 2.5W.
The output voltage of HV816DB3 is typically ±180V for high
lamp brightness. An external N-channel TrenchFET Power
MOSFET, Vishay Si7820DN, is used to handle the high
power required to boost the output voltage to 180V for a
16.5in2 EL lamp load using an input voltage of 5.0V for VIN.
A high forward non-repetitive peak current diode, BAS20HT1
is used between VIN and VDD. For applications using
separated supplies for VIN and VDD, the diode between VIN
and VDD can be removed.
The discharge rate of the output driving the EL lamp can be
adjusted to minimize audible noise. By increasing the value
of the RSLEW resistor, the discharge rate will increase which
will reduce audible noise. But this will also reduce lamp
brightness. RSLEW can be set to a value between 100kΩ and
500kΩ, with 100kΩ for maximum brightness.
The EL lamp frequency can be set using the resistor REL on
the board or by an external clock input at the SEL pin. To use
an external clock input at the SEL pin, the REL resistor should
be removed and REL-Osc pin connected to GND.

Connections:
SEL, Input
CMOS logic Input to set the output EL frequency. To use
this pin, the REL-Osc pin should be connected to GND. The
frequency input at this pin should be 4x desired output frequency. An external CLK signal can be used for this input.
This pin, if not used, should be connected to GND.
VIN, Input
Inductor Input Voltage. The HV816DB3 board is optimized
for VIN range of 4.5V to 5.0V. For input voltage values outside
this range, the demoboard circuit can be re optimized by
changing some component values. If separated supplies are
used for VIN and VDD then the diode BAS20HT1 between
VIN and VDD can be removed.
VA and VB, Outputs
VA and VB are connected to an EL lamp. Polarity is irrelevant.
VDD, Input
Device Input Voltage. The input voltage range for VDD is 2.7V
to 5.5V. If separated supplies are used for VDD and VIN,
then the diode BAS20HT1 between VIN and VDD can be
removed.
Board layout
The HV816DB3 is designed with top connections only with a
backside GND plane. All vias are ground connections. This
allows the board to be mounted to a grounded heat sink for
improved power dissipation. The four mount holes can be
used to connect the board to heat sink, if needed.
GND
Device Ground. Connect to power supply ground.
EN, Input
A CMOS logic input which enables/disables the lamp driver.
A logic high (1.5V to VDD) enables the driver and a logic low
(0 to 0.2V) disables the driver.
