Current mode control is a popular control method for switching regulators, but there are cases where the specifications for transient response characteristics with respect to load current changes
are insufficient. In these instances switching regulators utilizing hysteresis control are often used. Constant-on-time control, which is a type of hysteresis control, maintains constant output
voltage by feeding back ripple voltage that occurs within the output voltage and performing switching control while comparing the reference voltage with the bottom of the ripple voltage.
When the feedback voltage drops below the reference voltage a one-shot pulse is generated and the high-side switch turns on, supplying current to the output (from the input). In this method
sequential switching control is performed by simple comparison, virtually eliminating delay time for feedback control, enabling faster transient response than current mode control.
H3RegTM control is a more advanced type of constant on time control developed by ROHM. When the load current suddenly increases the output voltage drops and if the feedback voltage does
not rise higher than the reference voltage (even after the predetermined on-time) the on-time of the high-side switch is extended and more power is supplied, accelerating the return of the
output voltage. As a result, faster transient response can be obtained vs. constant on-time control. Plus, the number of switching operations during sudden load changes is decreased,
minimizing noise generation.
