BCM4500
The BCM94555 satellite modem brings a new level of performance to
the satellite television industry with the integration of the BCM4500 (an
integrated advanced modulation receiver and turbo FEC decoder), the
BCM3360 (satellite link optimized DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS media
access controller (MAC), and the BCM3440 (CMOS satellite tuner and
turbo encoding/IQ interface return link ASIC). This breakthrough
system uses industry-standard products from the high volume cable
modem market and the satellite direct broadcast satellite (DBS) market
and offers industry-leading performance. The system provides for a
standards based solution implementing DVB-S/DOCSIS with the option
to optimize system operating points using advanced modulation turbo
FEC capabilities built into the BCM4500.
The BCM4500 advanced modulation design provides 50% more
throughput in the same satellite bandwidth at standard QPSK operating
points while simultaneously improving BER performance beyond
existing levels. A high performance turbo FEC code is implemented
with all required RAM on-chip to move system operating points near the
theoretical capacity limits. The BCM4500 is a single-chip digital
satellite receiver that supports BPSK, QPSK, 8PSK and 16QAM
modulations with iteratively (turbo) decoded error correction coding and
also receives DVB-S QPSK signals.
The BCM4500 also features a simplified, high-level application
program interface (API) user interface employing an on-chip
microcontroller for all system configuration, acquisition, control and
monitoring functions, including an integrated DiSEqCTM 2.0 controller.
The BCM3440 is a highly-integrated CMOS satellite tuner designed to
operate with the BCM4500. It supports the full 950 to 2150 MHz input
frequency range.
The BCM3360 provides a modified DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 1.0/1.1
media access controller (MAC). The BCM3360 also includes a 140MHz MIPS32TM processor, an IP Security (IPSec) engine, a 16-bit,
100-MHz SDRAM Interface, 10/100 Ethernet MAC with integrated
transceiver and MII interface, a USB 1.1 controller with integrated
transceiver, an HPNA 2.0 MAC and support for extended devices
through an EBI interface.
The BCM3360 DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 1.0/1. media access controller
(MAC) that has been optimized for satellite system performance
including integrated PEP and full support for baseline privacy (BPI+)
encryption and decryption. Multiple user support includes 16 SIDS in
downstream, 16 destination address (DA) perfect match filters, a 256
multicast/unicast filter entry CAM for multicast/unicast hash filters, and
16 independent upstream queues for support of QoS. To enhance
operational support, the BCM3360 MAC provides extended network
management MIB/diagnostic features.
The BCM94555 broadband satellite system modem evaluation system is
intended for use by broadband satellite systems engineers for the
evaluation of the high performance, standards-based 2-way satellite
modem. It is also intended for use by hardware designers and software
developers to reduce product design and development time. The
simplified user interface gives engineers easy access to various system
parameters, allowing them to select optimal settings to match the link
budget requirements. Hardware engineers and software developers can
use the BCM94555 as a baseline for the final product architecture and
also use it as a test and measurement device to verify their final product
performance. The BCM94555 package is delivered with the Broadband
Studio software, user manual, schematic drawings and bill of materials.
