MEMS Reed Sensors Are Used ToTrack ToTrack the Migratory Habits of Fish REED RELAYS REED SENSORS REED SWITCHES Introduction Fish world wide is the major protein source of many of the countries around the world. Being a major food source increases concern that the huge fish populations are properly regenerating their populations on a healthy continuing basis. Fish farming has been increasing dramatically, but when comparing the two, the natural species comes out on top in many critical categories. So studying the migratory habits of some of the major fish species like salmon with tracking devices can yield critical information. These tracking devices are extremely small and contain micro-electronics. To extract the information MEDER’s micro-reed sensor that draws no power, successfully extracts the needed information when called upon. Figure 1. MMS-x-2 Sensor physical layout Features • Smallest reed sensor on the market • The reed switch used in the Reed Sensor is hermetically sealed and is therefore not sensitive to wet, moist environments • The micro-reed sensor is capable of fish implantation even in salt water. • Surface mounting available • Contacts dynamically tested • High reliability • Zero power consumption Applications • Ideal for use where space is of paramount concern, in a battery operated device and where animal implantation is a requirement. Figure 2. Implantable tracking device with built in MEMS reed sensor device. Figure 3. MEMS reed switch MEMS Reed Sensor Solves a Major Problem of Battery Power in the MicroMicro-circuits used in fish tracking In this case, a micro-electronic device with MEDER’s micro-miniature reed switch (MMS Series is implanted into migratory fish. Salmon is the primary fish that is tracked, since it is so widely used as a food source. When the fish are caught, a magnet is used to close the reed switch, and then the vital information is wirelessly transmitted to a receiver where the information is recorded for later analysis. Because MEDER’s sensors use hermetically sealed reed switches that are further packaged in strong high strength plastic, they can be subject to rough treatment and environmental concerns such as grit, water, and moisture without any loss of reliability.
