UPS Feedback - En Route Trials 29 Sep 15 NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 1 Overview - En Route Trials Overview - UPS involvement to date - Typical flight operation - Flight deck feedback NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 2 CPDLC Enroute Trials Overview Incremental testing for Enroute Trials: • Increment 1, Jun - Jul 2015: • • Increment 2, July 2015: • • • Ground testing with FAA Global 5000 aircraft Airborne testing with Global 5000 in holding pattern Increment 3, Jul – Aug 2015: • Airborne testing with Global 5000 transiting ZKC • Ground testing with UPS MD11 aircraft Increment 4, Sep – Oct 2015: • Airborne testing with industry aircraft transiting ZKC NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 3 Increment 4 testing overview: Dates: 14 Sep to 30 Oct 2015 Timeframe: nightly 10pm – 6am CST Location: Kansas City Center (ZKC), Ozark sector • 20-45 minutes CPDLC testing while in heading mode Goal: 25 flight tests during 7 week timeframe Participants: • 2 ZKC controllers • FAA, Harris reps at ZKC • FAA Tech Center using testbed ERAM (KUSC) • Industry aircraft (UPS, UAL, FedEx) NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 4 KC Center Ozark airspace for Trials MCI STL BUM IIU Ozark Airspace RZC NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 5 UPS Participation to date • Increment 3 • • Remote ground testing with ERAM (2 events w MD11) Increment 4 • 7 flights to date: 4 B767, 3 MD11 • Planned 20 more flights (4 flights per week) NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 6 Typical Flight Execution • • Conference call 1.5 hrs prior to departure • Review plan for evening events • Verify tail number, planned routing/timing In ZKC airspace • • ATC directs aircraft logon when all facilities ready • Logon takes 1-5 minutes to ATC COMM ESTABLISHED • Automation programmed for UM169, Welcome Banner Crew directed to NOT accept message until directed • • After ACCEPT Welcome Banner, UM80 automatically sent When ready for testing, acft assigned HDG on ATC Primary • ATC assigns Secondary freq for messaging NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 7 Typical Flight Execution • Flight Crew protocol during testing • Pilot Flying maintains ATC Primary on HDG • ATC Primary freq on overhead speaker • Pilot Monitoring (PM) uses Secondary freq for messaging • PM manipulates FMC and records results • Both pilots aware of “Cease Testing” code words NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 8 Typical Flight Execution • CPDLC messaging protocol • Typically receive 5-15 ROUTE CLEARANCES (UM74, UM79, UM80, UM83) • PM reads back each message on Secondary freq for verification • Flight deck handling of ROUTE CLEARANCE messages: • STANDBY message sent to ATC • Routing loaded into FMC, verified, and executed • ATC advised if a “clean load” or errors noted • ACCEPT (WILCO) sent to ATC NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 9 Typical Flight Execution • CPDLC messaging protocol (continued) • Following each clearance, UM137 CONFIRM ASSIGNED ROUTE message received to collect F-PLN data • • Last ROUTE CLEARANCE back on course • • UM137 is not planned for every message in production ATC readback of last clearance on Primary freq Total testing timeframe: approximately 40 minutes NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 10 MD11 Flight Deck Feedback Typical UM137 CONFIRM ASSIGNED ROUTE Key: Make sure route clnc is executed before completing this message. NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 11 Flight Deck Feedback - Overall very pleased with CPDLC messaging - Experienced some aircraft anomalies (known and new) - No errors printing messages - UM79 message format for consideration NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 12 MD11 Flight Deck Feedback UM74, UM80, UM83: No anomalies NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 13 MD11 Flight Deck Feedback UM79: -921 Known anomaly – If cleared to STAR transition fix with airway into transition fix, a discontinuity displays between transition fix and next waypoint. Should be resolved in -922 NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 14 MD11 Flight Deck Feedback CPDLC Log: New anomaly Due to memory limitations, CPDLC log will delete old messages. NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 15 B767 Flight Deck Feedback UM83: Known anomaly If airway is first course from diverging waypoint, error would occur. (e.g. At JOT, cleared JOT J146 GIJ J554 JHW....) NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 16 B767 Flight Deck Feedback NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 17 B767 Flight Deck Feedback UM79: No anomalies UM80: New anomaly #1 The last couple waypoints on STAR would not load. NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 18 B767 Flight Deck Feedback UM80: New anomaly #1 continued…. On initial UM80, some waypoints are missing on STAR NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 19 B767 Flight Deck Feedback UM80: New anomaly #2 Trouble loading UM80 back to KSDF. NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 20 Printer Works! Unlike CPDLC DCL, every route clearance printed cleanly on MD11 NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 21 UM79 verbiage UM169 appended to UM79 doesn’t appear as clean as DCL NextGen CPDLC Enroute Trials 22 Questions??
