To optimize the LED brightness control at high temperatures, the LEDs must have a sufficient thermal extraction path, if not the reduction in drive current will not be optimal. The thermal control threshold points are set by adjusting R2. Three values (33K, 22K, and 10K) were tested. These values were chosen to provide thermal break points of approximately 25ºC, 40ºC, and 60ºC. Note, that the LED drive current will not continually dim to zero – the thermal controls applying DC control to that VADJ pin has a dimming ratio from maximum current of approximately 5:1. Once the reduced DC level drops below the shutdown threshold of around 200mV, the LED drive current will fall to zero and the LEDs will be off. The slope of the current reduction is determined by the beta value of the thermistor. The larger the Beta value the sharper will be the resultant current control response. The slope of the current reduction is also affected by Q1’s base emitter voltage variation with temperature. www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 7 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver Output Current Adjustment By External DC Control Voltage: 1N4148 6.2K VADJ 1.25V +Vout AMLDL-RZ 1 10K -Vin 1 1st LED -Vout Last LED 1 GND 1N4148 6.2K VADJ 1.25V +Vout AMLDL-RZ 1 10K -Vin 1 1st LED -Vout Last LED 1 GND 1N4148 VADJ 1.25V +Vout AMLDL-RZ 1 +5V ~ +Vin 6.2K 10K -Vin 1 1st LED -Vout Last LED 1 GND 4.7K 1N4148 TL431 OUT: 0 ~ 2.5V 10K 6.2K +Vout AMLDL-RZ 1 1 VADJ 1.25V 10K -Vin 1 1st LED -Vout Last LED 1 GND GND 1N4148 6.2K VADJ 1.25V +Vout AMLDL-RZ 1 10K -Vin 1 1st LED -Vout Last LED 1 GND 1N4148 6.2K VADJ 1.25V +Vout AMLDL-RZ 1 10K -Vin 1 1st LED -Vout Last LED 1 GND www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 8 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver Typical Characteristics: AMLDL-3050-RZ Operating Frequency vs Input Voltage (Forward Voltage = 3.5V per LED) www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 9 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver AMLDL-3050-RZ Efficiency vs Vin (Forward Voltage = 3.5V per LED) www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 10 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver AMLDL-3050-RZ Output Current Vs VADJ www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 11 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver Typical Characteristics: AMLDL-3060Z Operating Frequency vs Input Voltage (Forward Voltage = 3.5V per LED) www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 12 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver AMLDL-3060Z Efficiency vs Vin (Forward Voltage = 3.5V per LED) www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 13 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver AMLDL-3060Z Output Current Vs VADJ www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 14 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver Typical Characteristics: AMLDL-3070Z Operating Frequency vs Input Voltage (Forward Voltage = 3.5V per LED) www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 15 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver AMLDL-3070Z Efficiency vs Vin (Forward Voltage = 3.5V per LED) www.aimtec.com F 051e R12.E Tel: +1 514 620 2722 16 of 17 Toll free: + 1 888 9 AIMTEC (924 6832) North America only Series AMLDL-RZ Up to 700mA | LED Driver AMLDL-3070Z Output Current Vs VADJ NOTE: 1.
