The CX-2 is hermetically sealed in a rugged, miniature ceramic package, a quarter the size of an eight pin dual-in-line package. A CX crystal incorporated into a Pierce oscillator (single inverter) circuit provides a high stability with low current consumption. A conventional HCMOS Pierce oscillator circuit is shown below. The crystal is effectively inductive and in a Pi-network circuit with C and C providing the additional phase shift necessary to sustain oscillation. The oscillation frequency (f ) is 15 to 150ppm above the crystals series resonant frequency (f ). Rf Amplifier Buffer 1 2 CS 0 Osc. Freq. R also stabilizes the oscillator against changes in the amplifiers output resistance (R ). R should be increased for higher voltage operation. A A 1 The CX crystal calibration tolerance is influenced by the effective circuit capacitances, specified as the load capacitance (C ). In practice, the effective valus of C will be less than that calculated from C , C , and CS values due to the effect of the amplifier output resistance. C should be minimized.
