Ready to power the lighting revolution.
When it comes to modular power converters,
RECOM has always been sensitive to
market requirements and our customer’s
needs. 25 years ago we created our first
modular DC/DC converter which has
since influenced how design engineers structure their power supply concepts. Today, with
over 100 million RECOM converters sold
and now a full range of constant current LED
drivers in our catalogue - we are ready to
power the lighting revolution. Our new

Through the years, RECOM has invested
millions of dollars in product innovation,
production capability, quality assurance and
application support to provide our customers
with a superior product, support, pricing
and availability. This is what our customers
around the globe expect when choosing
RECOM converters to power their new
designs.
Global Availability
RECOM products are available from leading
global distributors, catalogues and a comprehensive network of local representatives
who provide helpful support and advice.
At RECOM, we make no compromises when
it comes to quality. Our processes and
products meet the highest international
standards. But for us that’s just the beginning
– our goal is zero defects!
This applies not only to the manufacturing
and quality control phases, but also to our
product development processes. Our inhouse laboratory does “Highly Accelerated
Lifetime Tests” (HALT) in a climate chamber
during the prototyping phase to eliminate
causes of failure.
100% customer satisfaction is our goal.
Nothing less.
We at RECOM want to ensure our LED
drivers last at least as long as the LED itself.
That's why all our LightLine products
come with a standard "5 Year Warranty".
However, replacing a faulty product is not
where our commitment to quality ends - it is
just the beginning. If a product fails, we want
to know why. We
pull it apart and
do not rest until
we find the cause,
even if it is not due to a factory defect. We
never stop improving our products to meet
our client’s application needs.
Even though we may never achieve perfection, "zero defects" is our goal. That's how
we have built a reputation for high quality
products.

Focus on high power lighting markets.
Probably the most noteworthy technical
characteristic of high power LEDs is their
amazing long life of 50,000 or more hours.
Since they are virtually maintenance-free
for five or 10 years, LEDs are the technology
of choice for a vast variety of lighting applications such as:
Residential
Recessed, cabinet/undercabinet, desktop,
pendant, daylight simulation, mood lighting
Commercial
Spot lights, display lights, LED backlight,
freezer, emergency, theatrical lighting
Industrial

Space lighting, fluorescent/panel replacements
Outdoors
Landscape, off-grid solar, path lights,
parking lights
RECOM LED Drivers are compatible
with most LEDs in the industry
We are working closely with LED manufacturers to bring to the market the right drivers for
the right LEDs.

Why constant current is the better solution
Connecting LEDs in parallel
LEDs are non-linear devices. When the voltage
increases past a certain threshold the LED starts to
emit light and the current increases sharply. If the
voltage continues to rise the LED rapidly overheats
and burns out. The trick is to operate LEDs in a narrow band between full OFF and full ON. In addition
the operating voltage varies between different high
power LEDs – even within the same batch and supplier. It also changes with the ambient temperature
and the age of the LED.
When powered by a constant current driver, each
LED in a chain has the same current. Since the
emitted light is proportional to the current, all LEDs
have the same brightness. The majority of high
power white LEDs are designed to operate
at between 350mA and 1A.
Driving multiple strings from a single driver is risky if
any one LED fails. With two strings in parallel and if
one LED fails open circuit the 700mA constant
current will damage the second string after a very
short time. If any LED fails short circuit, the current
will be unbalanced between both strings. This will
eventually cause the string to fail with the same
consequence as described above. A simple method
to avoid disaster is to add a current mirror circuit.

Most DC/DC constant current LED drivers are so
called “buck” or “step down” converters. This means
that the maximum output voltage is always slightly
lower than the input voltage. Thus the number of
LEDS that can be powered depends on the input
voltage.

DC input applications.
A very simple way to have a dimmable lamp,
even from a variable input voltage source
(batteries, etc), is to use the RECOM module RCD-24 with a potentiometer to adjust the
output current with a 100% linearity. The
Zener diode provides a reference voltage so
the dimming resolution is not affected by
changes in input voltage.
Over-Temperature protection
We can use a thermistor to make a very
simple, low cost and reliable thermal
derating circuit using the analogue dimming
input of the RCD-24 series LED drivers. The
analogue dimming input is controlled by an
external voltage and so a PTC thermistor
plus two voltage divider resistors are the only
additional components required to implement an automatic temperature derating
function. If different derating temperature
points are required, PTC thermistors are
available with different threshold tempera-

LED recessed lights or LED Downlights have
