Expansion Connectors
The peripheral pins of the MCU are accessible via three expansion connectors on the board. They can be accessed from
the top side of the board via test points and from the bottom side of the board via expansion receptacles. The signals
accessible via the three connectors are shown in the diagram below.

The TMS570LS31x Hercules Development Kit (HDK) is ideal for evaluating and starting development with the Hercules platform of
safety microcontrollers. The kit is comprised of a development board, a DC power supply, a mini-B USB cable, an Ethernet cable and
a software installation DVD. The development board features an on board XDS100v2 JTAG emulator along with access to several
key communication and peripheral interfaces.

Microcontroller Development Kit Safety MCU Demo
Install the Hercules Development Kit software. A full install is required to ensure that all demo
features of the MCU Development Kit are available.
Plug in the +12V power supply into the Hercules Development Kit (HDK) board and connect
the USB mini-B cable between the board and a USB port on the PC. The PC will recognize
the HDK board as an XDS100v2 JTAG Emulator and a USB Serial port.

IMPORTANT: Code Composer Studio
v4 or the HDK Demo software must be
installed before the USB mini-B cable for
the CPU card‘s XDS00v2 JTAG is plugged
into the PC!

Start the Hercules Demo software.
In Windows XP, the software will be
available in ‘Start->All Programs->Texas
Instruments->Hercules->Hercules Safety
MCU Demos’.
Launch any of the Hercules Demos from
the launch pad. Internet access is required
to view the device documentation. Code
Composer Studio™ IDE must be installed to
view the microcontroller source code.
