BCM84512 Carrier Ethernet To reduce board design complexity and enable lower power and cost savings, the BCM84512 integrates fractional-N clock synthesizers, as well as ultralow bandwidth jitter filtering PLLs commonly available today as discrete components. Only a single 156.25 MHz reference clock is required for either LAN, WAN, or OTN operation. The BCM84512 incorporates OTN mapping/demapping, framing/deframing, and forward error correction (FEC) encoding/decoding functions to enable high-density and low-power packet optical transport applications. The BCM84512 is built upon Broadcom's field-proven 10G/40G Ethernet (10GbE/40GbE) PHY/EDC products with the additions of 10GbE/40GbE performance monitoring and all functions required to transport 10GbE/40GbE over LAN/WAN/OTN networks. With all the OTN functions disabled by software, the BCM84512 is a LAN/WAN PHY with advanced Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC), targeted for SMF application that interface to either SFP+ or XFP modules. With OTN functions enabled by software, the device enables an Ethernet-based line card to interface to an OTN network without the need for an extra transponder card. With these functions enabled, the device also provides longer transmission distance and robust OAM support per the ITU-T G.709 OTN standard. To ensure interoperability with the existing 10G/40G OTN deployments, the BCM84512 integrates the standard RS(255,239) FEC code and enhanced FEC codes as specified in ITU-T G.709/G.975. In addition, the device incorporates performance monitoring and failure handling for 10GbE LAN, WIS, and OTN, according to the respective standards.
