RFID_SensorsCatalog 2/18/2010 11:32 AM Page 11-3 RFID Overview Allen-Bradley industrial RFID system consists of three key components: Communication Interfaces: To either a network or controller. Transceivers: At each point or station in the manufacturing process where identification or the reading/writing of information is desired. RFID Tags: One for each item, pallet, tote, or transport fixture used in the application. System Features Quick Selection Interfaces available for EtherNet/IP™, ControlNet™ and DeviceNet™, as well as MicroLogix™ (DF1) and 1746 backplanes Rugged transceiver styles designed for industrial locations 1.5 MHz low frequency technology for enhanced immunity to EMI, interference from metallic reflective surfaces, oil, water, and other potentially disruptive materials 13.56 MHz high frequency technology ideal for light industrial applications Seven character read-only or 2, 8, 32 KB read/write tags Read speeds up to 2500 characters per second (cps) and write speeds up to 1666 cps Different tag styles with sensing distances of up to 8 in. Data is always with the item you are tracking. The downside is more memory is needed on the tag that might increase the cost of the tag. The new iCode tags are very cost effective and have 128 B of memory. Data is in a remote server linked to a tag ID: Tag information is just an ID number. Lower cost tags can be used because of less memory but they have to be linked to a data server which might require additional cost. iCode tags are very cost effective and can be used with this method as well. Unlike the bar code systems used for similar, less demanding applications, industrial RFID systems are designed to withstand harsh environments. Plus, reusable read/write tags allow for flexibility in information and application. ISO 15693 iCode is an open standard for high frequency 13.56 MHz RFID. iCode Tags are lower cost and available from multiple manufacturers. Tags are available in many different styles and sizes to fit most applications. 2 1.5 MHz low frequency RFID system is targeted for EMI intensive environments. It provides enhanced immunity to EMI, interference from metallic reflective surfaces, oil, water, and other potentially disruptive materials. Propriety F-Code tags are offered in 7 B read only or 2, 8, and 32 KB read/write with a sensing rang of up to 100 mm (3.94 in.). Read only tags are ideal for license plate applications. 3 13.56 MHz high frequency RFID system is ISO 15693 Compliant. iCode Tags are lower cost and available from multiple manufacturers. Tags are available in many different styles and sizes to fit most applications with a sensing range of up to 200 mm (7.87 in.).
