Wear extremity and whole body dosimeters while handling mCi (37MBq) quantities. 85 Use shielding to minimize exposure while handling Sr. Use tools to indirectly handle unshielded sources and potentially contaminated vessels. 85 Practice routine operations to improve dexterity and speed before using Sr. 85 Prohibit eating, drinking, smoking and mouth pipetting in room where Sr is handled. Use transfer pipettes, spill trays and absorbent coverings to confine contamination. 85 Handle Sr compounds that are potentially volatile or in powder form in ventilated enclosures. Sample exhausted effluent and room air by continuously drawing a known volume through membrane filters. Wear disposable lab coat, gloves and wrist guards for secondary protection. Maintain contamination and exposure control by regularly monitoring and promptly decontaminating gloves and surfaces. 85 Use end-window Geiger-Mueller detectors, NaI (Tl) detector or liquid scintillation counter to detect Sr. 85 Submit urine sample for bioassay after handling Sr to determine uptake by personnel. Isolate waste in sealed, clearly labeled, shielded containers and dispose according to approved guidelines. Establish air concentration, surface contamination and bioassay action levels below regulatory limits. Investigate and correct any causes that may threaten these levels to be exceeded. 85 On completing an operation, secure all Sr; remove and dispose protective clothing and coverings; monitor and decontaminate self and surface; wash hands and monitor them again.
