PHOENIX CONTACT 7 UL certification Technical information about PCB connection Approvals such as UL/CUL always bring up new questions for device manufacturers. As a responsible manufacturer of device connection technology, we develop and test our products such that our customers will not have any problems with the international approval of their devices. When plugged in, the COMBICON power connectors meet all requirements of increased shock protectionn for electrical power drives as per IEC 61800-5-1. 1800-5-1. 8 PHOENIX CONTACT UL recognizes terminals and connectors as individual components (UL 1059). In the end application, the components undergo a final evaluation and are approved together with the device (UL 508 (C) and UL 840). u ® Product standards Device standards UL 1059 "Terminal Blocks" UL 508 "Industrial control equipment" Phoenix Contact products are mainly tested and recognized in acc. with UL 1059 so that they can be used in industrial applications without any restrictions. Terminals that have been recognized as per UL 1059 meet the field wiring terminal block requirements stated in UL 508 and can thus be used in devices complying with this standard without any restrictions. UL 508 also allows the alternative measurement as per UL 840. The following table lists the air and creepage distances required for the components. The Use Group describes the future usage range of the termination device. Use Group Definition Max. voltage (V) UL 508 C "Power conversion equipment" Required distances (mm) Clearance Creepage distance A Operating elements, panels and similar 150 300 600 12.7 19.1 25.4 19.1 31.8 50.8 B Conventional devices, incl. office and electronic data processing devices and similar 150 300 600 1.6 2.4 9.5 1.6 2.4 12.7 Industrial applications, without any restrictions 150 300 600 3.2 6.4 9.5 6.4 9.5 12.7 C D Industrial applications, items with limited performance data (Limited rating) 300 600 1.6 4.8 3.2 9.5 This UL standard is applicable especially for power electronics (motor controllers, frequency inverters, etc.). The field wiring terminal block requirements resemble the UL 508 specifications. Here too, the alternative measurement as per UL 840 is possible. UL 840 "Insulation coordination including clearances and creepage distances for electrical equipment" This standard describes the alternative procedure for designing the isolation of end products for defined ambient conditions (surge voltage category, pollution degree, material index) as long as the device standard allows this. The following procedures are offered as per UL 840 (3rd edition 2005) in order to determine the air and creepage distances: 1. Equivalent clearances The clearances can fall below the clearance values required in the device standard if the termination device passes the surge voltage tests described in UL 840 (table 7.1) without sparkover. The surge voltage value depends on the clearance required in the product standard. 2. Clearances for limited surge voltages If it has been ensured that the surge voltages occurring during the operation do not exceed a defined maximum value, the required clearances can also be determined as per table 8.1 if the pollution degree is known. 3. Creepage distances The general minimum creepage distance requirements and the special minimum creepage distance requirements for PCBs described in table 9.1 taking into consideration the operating voltage, the pollution degree and the creep resistance of the material must be fulfilled. PHOENIX CONTACT 9 High capacity PCB PCB layout for 125 A Together with high current PCBs, the COMBICON power connectors enable a current carrying capacity of up to 125 A. Different PCB production technologies offer new device design options. The functions and modules required can thus be concentrated on a single PCB, making the devices compact. Other assembly processes as well as the expensive additional device wiring are therefore not required. Three different technologies: are distinguished in PCB production 1. Multi-layer technology Up to max. 210 μm on the outer layers Up to max. 400 μm on the inner layers Advantages: - Better heat distribution - Transport of higher currents - Substitute for cut and bend constructions 2. Thick copper technology Solid copper core inner layers Inner layers 0.6 – 2 mm Different and even asymmetrical layer structures are possible Advantages: - Reduction in interfaces - Through-contacting not required - Patented high current technology 3. Wirelaid PCB technology Enamel-insulated wires in the inside of the PCB Connection of the contact points using modern micro-welding technology Advantages: - High current densities thanks to additional wires - Control and power sections can be provided on a single PCB Thermogram of a test application with 125 A 10 PHOENIX CONTACT Three steps to your device approval as per UL 508 (C) and UL 840 Approval Pollution degree The approvals in the product standard as per UL 1059 and IEC 60664 can be found in the left column in the upper line. Safe connection paired with high capacity can be plugged onto PCB The PC 35 series is normally equipped with a screw flange which connects the connector and the base strip safely. Thanks to the threaded flange on the base strip, this can also be used as panel feed-through, thus offering a firm hold in the device without any additional work.
