DC Measurement
Cirrus offers more than 30 CMOS ADCs for precise DC
measurement – it’s our broadest industrial product line –
they’re ideal for thermocouple, weigh scale and GPS system
applications. With resolutions ranging from 16- to 24-bits,
use these ADCs for your most demanding measurement
designs.
Thermocouple / Temperature Measurement
Cirrus offers the industry’s most complete data acquisition
solutions for thermocouple design. The CS552X family
includes a low input current, chopper-stabilized, instrumentation amplifier integrated with multi-channel ∆Σ ADCs, which
use charge-balance techniques to achieve 16-bit (CS5521/23)
and 24-bit (CS5522/24/28) performance. The CS552X family
is available in two-channel (CS5521/22), four-channel
(CS5523/24), or eight-channel (CS5528) configurations.
Selectable inputs of 25 mV, 55 mV, 100 mV, 1V, 2.5 V, and 5 V
are easily achieved using the on-chip PGIA (programmable
gain instrumentation amplifier). For ground-based thermocouple applications, the devices include a charge pump drive,
which applies a negative voltage bias to on-chip amplifiers.
Designed to precisely measure temperature, pressure,
chemical composition, current or voltage, these highly
integrated single-supply ADCs are ideal for applications that
require both primary and secondary measurements. Target
applications include process indicators, thermocouples, digital
thermometers, blood gas analyzers, fetal oxygen saturation
systems and other industrial and medical applications.
Weigh Scale / Load Cell
The CS5516 and CS5520 are the most complete ADC
solutions available today for digitizing low-level signals from
strain gauges, load cells, and pressure transducers. With an
on-chip PGIA, choice of DC or AC bridge excitation, and software selectable reference and signal demodulation, the
CS5516 uses ∆Σ modulation to achieve 16-bit resolution at
output word rates up to 60 Hz. The CS5520 achieves 20-bit
resolution at word rates up to 60 Hz. Both ADCs include
system calibration to null offset and gain errors in the input
channel. The digital values associated with the system
calibration can be written to, or read from, the calibration RAM
locations at any time via the serial communications port.
The 4-bit DC offset DAC, in conjunction with digital correction,
is initially used to zero the input offset value.
The CS553X family of ADCs is also ideal for weigh scale applications. They are optimized for measuring low-level unipolar or
bipolar signals and use charge-balance techniques to achieve
16-bit (CS5531/33) and 24-bit (CS5532/34) performance. A
simple, 3-wire serial interface (SPI and Microwire compatible)
with Schmitt Trigger inputs is provided for microcontroller
communications. High dynamic range, programmable output
rates, and flexible power supply options make these ADCs ideal
for your next weigh scale design.

GPS System
The CS5523 ∆Σ ADC and the EP7311 embedded processor are
ideally suited for Global Positioning System (GPS) designs.
The CS5523 ∆Σ ADC simplifies implementing a still compass
for your GPS design. Using charge-balance techniques to
achieve 16-bit performance, this four-channel IC includes a
low input current, chopper-stabilized, instrumentation
amplifier. Selectable inputs of 25 mV, 55 mV, 100 mV, 1 V,
2.5 V, and 5 V are easily achieved using the on-chip PGIA.
A fourth-order ∆Σ modulator followed by a digital filter provides eight selectable output word rates. The digital filter is
designed to settle to full accuracy within one conversion cycle
and when operated at word rates below 30 Hz, they reject
both 50 and 60 Hz interference. These single supply products
are ideal solutions for measuring isolated and non-isolated,
low-level signals.
The small form factor and ultra-low power operation of the
EP7311 embedded processor makes it perfect for Global
Positioning System (GPS) designs. Core-logic functionality of
this system-on-chip is built around an ARM720T processor
running at clock speeds up to 74 and 90 MHz with 8 KB of
four-way, set-associative, unified cache and a write buffer. An
enhanced memory management unit is incorporated into the
ARM720T, which allows for support of popular operating
systems like Microsoft Windows CE and Linux. The EP7311
operates at 2.5 V, while its I/O accommodates a 2.5 to 3.3 V
range. The device has three basic power states: operating, idle,
and standby. You can easily create a low power system
solution by simply adding the desired memory and peripherals.
All necessary interface logic is integrated on-chip. You can’t
get lost with a Cirrus industrial chip.
Ethernet
Ethernet (per IEEE 802.3 standard) is the most widely adopted
standard for LAN communications over either coaxial or
twisted pair cable, typically runs at 10 Mbps, though speedier
systems can transfer data at 100 Mbps, and even at 1 gigabit
or more. Cirrus offers two powerful embedded Ethernet solutions for industrial connectivity communications, the CS8900A
Controller and the CS8952T Transceiver. The CS8900A is optimized for use within 10Base-T networks and the CS8952 is an
ideal choice as either 10Base-T or 10Base-TX transceiver. Each
device delivers unmatched price/performance and flexibility
because they eliminate the need for external components and
are adaptable to a broad range of industrial LAN applications.

The CS8900 has emerged as a de facto standard for embedded
Ethernet control, demonstrating its industrial-strength performance in Internet phones, industrial controllers, ADSL systems,
CNC machines, point-of sale equipment for gas stations, and
undersea data gathering equipment. The CS8952T has won
strong acceptance as OEMs increasingly migrate to machines
that communicate with other machines, giving rise to a critical
need for Fast Ethernet transceivers to operate reliably in highnoise environments. It combines analog and digital processing
onto a single chip to deliver high performance in critical
areas of noise immunity, near end crosstalk (NEXT) margin,
transmitter jitter, and power/receiver performance.
Energy Measurement
Cirrus offers cost effective, highly optimized energy measurement solutions. Utility providers and power meter manufacturers
are using our energy measurement technology to replace
electromechanical power meters with more efficient digital
electronic versions. The CS5460A, CS5451 and CS5471 use
Cirrus’ high performance analog front-end (AFE) technology to
achieve extremely accurate energy measurements.
In addition, the CS5460A provides an on chip calculation
engine and preventive maintenance features such as power
surge detection and identification of irregular power
fluctuations. The three “energy to digital” converters are the
perfect choice for manufacturers of exact energy management solutions, such as, power meters, home appliances and
industrial equipment.

Geophysical
Cirrus ADCs and digital filters are world renowned for
distinguishing and measuring very small analog signals in the
presence of much larger spurious signals. The CS532X and
CS537X families of ADC and digital filter chips provide the
most accurate digital representation of an input signal available
today and enable high-precision data acquisition for real-world
applications. The CS5371 and CS5372 are single and dual
channel high dynamic range, fourth-order 24 bit ∆Σ modulators and when used with the CS5376 four channel digital
filter produce a unique high-resolution A/D measurement
system for sonar, seismology and geophysical applications.
The CS89712 is a high-performance embedded processor
with 10 MB Ethernet functionality designed for low power
communication applications. This device features core-logic
functionality built around an ARM720T processor with an
enhanced memory management unit – allowing support of
popular operating systems such as embedded Linux. The
CS89712 Ethernet port includes on-chip RAM and 10Base-T
transmit and receive filters – perfect for geophysical applications.

T1/E1/J1 LIUs (Line Interface Unit)
The CS61884, Octal, E1/T1/J1 short-haul LIU enables portdense applications for the worldwide E1, North American T1
and Japanese J1 markets. The CS61884 builds on Cirrus’
patented matched impedance technology, which completely
eliminates the need to change external components between
75-ohm, 100-ohm and 120-ohm mode designs. The simplified,
single circuit design reduces component count, the manufacturing bill of materials (BOM) and allows manufacturers to
support all major international telecommunications protocol
standards in one “universal T1, E1, J1” functional line card.
The CS61884 integrates eight full-featured LIU channels in an
industry standard footprint and firmware compatible IC. Each
channel has complete receiver and transmitter circuitry with
crystal-less path-selectable jitter attenuation, full encoder/
decoder circuitry, loss of signal detection, and alarm indication
signal warnings. An arbitrary waveform generator allows
user-customized transmit pulse shapes. Three volt, I/O
provides lower power consumption versus other competitive
port-dense products.
Each channel provides internal AMI/B8ZS/HDB3 encoding/
decoding and crystal-less jitter attenuation that complies with
the most stringent standards. The CS61884 supports both
1.544 Mbps and 2.048 Mbps data transmission and enhanced
system diagnostics. Channel zero can be configured for G.772
non-intrusive monitoring of any of the other seven channels’
transmit paths.
Cirrus also offers the industry’s smallest dual T1/E1 LIU, the
CS61584A, with a package area-per-port of only 68 square
millimeters. This device delivers compelling performance in a
small form factor for a host of industrial applications including
data channel banks/concentrators, T1/E1 multiplexers, DACS,
and SONET/SDH multiplexers.
