Even with GPS and autopilots, clear communication is still the most
important element in aircraft operation. Increasing receiver
sensitivity allows longer radio range but that comes at a price.
Aviation radio happens to be close to FM (88 – 108 MHz). Strong
signals from nearby 50,000 Watt FM stations can distort in the
receiver input, interfering with the 5 – 25 Watt signals from the
airport tower.
Features
New FAA rules took effect in January 2011 to manage FM station
tower radiation patterns but that’s not enough. A filter is needed to
block the FM – but the filter itself can’t overload and add it’s own
distortion.
The filter pass band also needs to be quite narrow since interfering
sources can be close in frequency while the whole avionics band is
fairly wide – this means the filter must be tunable or switched. Using
a varactor tuned multi-pole approach gives a very small device –
perfect for flight or portable radios.
The MtronPTI TF0111 Avionics Pre-selector has an IP3 spec of 30
dBm minimum and can handle input power up to +20 dBm without
damage. Analog tuned with a single control line, the TF111 comes
in a 1.25” x 0.5” x 0.35” reflow hardened surface mount package.
