Sumida Power Module Qualification Testing

Application Note PM_AN-4
SPM Series Power Module Qualification Testing
1. Introduction
Sumida SPM series power modules are designed for use in industrial, computing and telecommunications
products and are characterized for operation over the full temperature range from -40°C to +85°C ambient.
To ensure that the modules meet reliability requirements under worst case operating conditions,
Qualification Testing is carried out by applying extreme environmental stresses in a controlled manner
and confirming that the modules continue to operate normally. Stress tests for qualifying power modules
have been developed by the industry, and are defined in the IPC standard IPC9592B.
2. Qualification Tests
The IPC9592B standard defines “Requirements for Power Conversion Devices for the Computer and
Telecommunications Industries”. This standard provides detailed requirements for qualification testing in
sections 4 and 5 of the document, with other sections covering other aspects of power module
requirements such as product documentation, quality processes and manufacturing conformance testing.
For the SPM series of power modules, Sumida carries out Qualification Testing according to the
requirements listed in IPC9592B for Class II products. [Class I is for consumer grade with 5 year life; Class
II is for high performance network equipment and industrial grade, with 5 to 15 year life.]

3. Test Reports
Once the qualification testing is completed for a particular product, a test report is produced. These test reports
can be made available to customers on request.
