AN1661 Sensor Calibration on SSC7102 Bosch Sensor Fusion Solution for Windows 8 Author: Tom Tse Microchip Technology INTRODUCTION This document provides information regarding end of line sensor calibration guidance for Windows 8.x using Microchip’s SSC7102 Bosch Sensor Fusion (BSX) Solution. It provides information that will assist a customer in passing WHQL and determine if the results are sufficient. Audience This document is written for system designers who have a background and are familiar with the sensor platform for Windows 8 and WHQL process. All of these sensors should be calibrated to obtain the most accurate data that reflects the physical reality of the device as well as passing the Microsoft WHQL tests. CALIBRATION TO MEET WINDOWS 8 WHQL REQUIREMENT • The Bosch “Self-contained 9-axis sensor fusion” algorithm has fast in-use background calibration of all sensors and meets the Microsoft Windows 8 specification. • There is no need to build a sample set of boards to help calibrate sensors. The exception is when a magnetometer is placed near metal devices or large current traces. - Need one sample to calibrate magnetometer. 2014 Microchip Technology Inc. DS00001661B-page 1 AN1661 • All sensors have close to 2X margin to meet Windows 8 accuracy requirements. For example, inclination accuracy is 3 degrees, and specification is 5 degrees. • No end of line calibration is required for WHQL certification. However, if high accuracy is required in the application, only accelerometer calibration is required. Please see application note “Multiple Accelerometers: Inline Calibration”, Rev. 1.0, December 2, 2013 for more information on this. DS00001661B-page 2 2014 Microchip Technology Inc. Note the following details of the code protection feature on Microchip devices: • Microchip products meet the specification contained in their particular Microchip Data Sheet. • Microchip believes that its family of products is one of the most secure families of its kind on the market today, when used in the intended manner and under normal conditions. • There are dishonest and possibly illegal methods used to breach the code protection feature. All of these methods, to our knowledge, require using the Microchip products in a manner outside the operating specifications contained in Microchip’s Data Sheets. Most likely, the person doing so is engaged in theft of intellectual property. • Microchip is willing to work with the customer who is concerned about the integrity of their code. • Neither Microchip nor any other semiconductor manufacturer can guarantee the security of their code.
