Power Management and Analog Companions (PMAAC) AT73C260 USB Bridge for UICC Secure Multimedia Card SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) cards have served mobile telephones well since their inception. Today there are billions of SIM cards in use all over the world. However, the evolution of mobile telephones into portable multimedia platforms is pushing the limits of SIM cards, in terms of capacity, security and data transfer rate. To overcome these limits, a new architecture has been defined for mobile phone cards. Known as USB UICC (Universal Integrated Circuit Card), this architecture has been standardized by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). The UICC is not restricted to Web- and multimedia-enabled mobile phones. It can also be used for DRM (Digital Rights Management), multimedia stream decryption (Pay TV) and as a mass storage device. The full-speed interface between the host (mobile phone, set-top box, PC, etc.) and the device (UICC) has been defined as the IC_USB 1.0 (InterChip USB), a short-range variant of the USB 2.0 standard that has also been normalized by ETS (USB 2.0 Section7). Telecom service providers and users are pressing for a secure, high-capacity card that, in addition to storing the subscriber identity and personal telephone directory, can act as a repository for a wide range of audio and video files, web pages, access keys for pay TV services, etc. Today, the existing chipsets that drive mobile phones do not support this interface. What is missing is a bridge to link existing mobile phone chipsets to the UICC. Atmel’s AT73C260 provides this solution. UICC Device AT73C260 USB Bridge for UICC Secure Multimedia Card The AT73C260 is a highly compact, low energy-consuming USB bridge that provides a choice of host (upstream) interfaces that make it plug-compatible with the majority of existing mobile phone chipsets, and a device (downstream) interface to a UICC. It carries out the required voltage conversions, and provides sufficient power to drive the IC-USB signals.
