Galvanic isolation and stabilisation
Uninterruptible power supply
The direct parallel circuit consisting
of several power supplies enables
customised adaptation of the output
power. This must not be confused
with redundant switching, when the
stabilised load current is to be shared
equally.
DC/DC converters galvanically isolate
the input from the output voltage and
prepare them:
Mains interruptions and brown-outs are
a frequent cause of system failures.
Battery-supported or capacitor based
uninterruptible power supply units
(UPS) units cover these types of mains
network faults and thereby increase
system availability.
•• PROeco, PROmax and PRO-H power
supply units: up to five devices can
be connected in parallel.
•• Also featuring our INSTAPOWER
power supplies: up to three devices
can be directly switched in parallel.
•• Indication of the failure of individual
devices can be achieved using
optional diode modules.
•• To compensate for voltage losses
which occur due to the higher cable
resistance,
•• To avoid ground loops which can
occur in plants which are spread
over a large area.
•• A potential-free alarm relay and a
transistor output give you full status
monitoring.
•• The DC/DC-Converter is a protection
class III device, thus you can use
them in floating earth systems such
as might be found when operating
back-up batteries.
Useful information
To ensure the most even
distribution of the load within the
parallel connected power supply
units, the voltage difference
must not be more than ±50
mV. This balance is achieved
when the plus wire is connected.
Symmetrical wiring also helps
to distribute the current uniformly.

•• Different status relays permit status
monitoring.
•• The UPS control unit monitors the
input voltage and, in the event of
a fault, switches immediately to
battery operation.
•• When the power is restored, the
input voltage is again switched
over to the load and the battery is
recharged.
•• An integrated deep-discharge
protection system and an optimised
charge curve ensure that the battery

Power reserve for peak currents
Redundant power supply units
Selective load protection
For selective triggering of circuit
breakers or for short-term additional
power reserves, a capacitor module
can be integrated into the 24 V circuit.
The availability of the power supply
units is increased by the use of
redundant circuits. Here, each
individual power supply unit can cope
with the total load required in the event
of a failure by itself.
The breakdown of the whole secondary
load into individual load circuits which
have quick-operating safety elements in
case of a fault is known as selective
load protection. Electronic fuses are
ideal to meet the special requirements
found in selective load protection.
•• The integrated alarm relay monitors
the input voltage, thereby monitoring
the status of the 24 V DC power
supply.
•• Sufficient power for the pulse
triggering of circuit breakers (MCBs)
•• To further increase the power
reserves, multiple capacitor modules
can be connected in parallel.

•• In the case of redundancy switching,
the diode module‘s output current
must not exceed that of either
switched-mode power supply units.
•• Diode modules are also used
for a secure parallel circuit of
switched-mode power supply units.
•• Full status monitoring thanks to
integral alarm monitoring the voltage
of both inputs.

TIP
The capacitor module can be
used independently of the output
power from the power supply
modules. When triggering circuit
breakers, the line impedance
must be observed. You will find
the relevant values for circuit
breakers here:

•• The tripping characteristic curve of
the electronic fuse is, on the one
hand, fast enough to switch off the
faulty circuit quickly; and on the
other, tolerant enough to deal with a
motor start-up or capacitive loads.
•• A switch to turn the output on or off
means that it is simpler to diagnose
errors and to commission.
•• The fuse triggering is signalled via a
potential-free alarm relay
•• A reset input allows the fuse to be
switched on again remotely.

Active load distribution
Operating temperature, power
reserve and derating
Short-circuit and overload
Active load distribution (active current
sharing) ensures that a load current is
evenly shared over two power supplies.
The availability of the total power
supply is increased considerably, as
each power supply is always operated
with just half of the nominal load at
most.
Power supply units for industrial use
offer extended operating temperature
ranges (–25 to +70 °C). Up to the
“derating” operating point, they have
power reserves, above this point they
can only be operated at reduced load.
The PROmax power supply units follow
the IU output characteristic curve in the
event of a short-circuit/overload and are
therefore permanently short-circuit proof.
Useful information
Only use devices of the same
type at all times. Active load
distribution is guaranteed by
means of the redundancy
modules CP T RM 10 and CP T
RM 20.
•• Up to 45 °C, the device can
be operated continuously with
maximum of 120 % of rated current.
•• Up to 60 °C is 100% of rated current
available.
•• Compared to Hicc-up or foldback
characteristic curves, operation with
almost any capacitive loads is possible.
•• PROmax power supply units deliver a
constant 120 to 150 % of the nominal
current in short-circuit operation with a
simultaneously reduced voltage.
•• When the short-circuit or the overload
is removed, there is a prompt return to
normal operation.
Inrush current limit
Inrush current limiters improve the
dimensioning of the mains fuses
•• Power supply units from the lower
power classes mainly have a passive
inrush current limiter, e.g. PRO-M 3
A and 5 A models.
•• Power supply units with larger
power classes have an active inrush
current limiter, e.g. all 1-phase PRO-M
modules above 10 A.

Power Supply Selection Considerations
Power Supply Selection Considerations
Output Voltage
All Weidmüller Switchmode Power Supplies have a
regulated output voltage, that is the output voltage remains
constant irrespective of input voltage or load current,
provided the supply voltage is within the specified range.
Most models can be powered from DC as well as AC
Environmental
Environmental issues to consider are the ambient
temperature where the power supply is expected to operate.
Note the derating for high ambient temperature use.
Vibration in the area of use must also be considered.
Power Boost
All Weidmüller Switchmode Power Supplies have start up
boost of up to 400%. This allows for non resistive loads to
be started. Inductive loads, i.e. solenoid valves and motors,
have a starting current as high as six times full load current,
while capacitive loads, i.e. some electronic devices and
PLC’s with input filtering capacitors have a start up current
of up to twelve times. Switchmode power supplies have
a built in protection circuit which turns the output off if a
sudden load is introduced which exceeds the rated load of
the power supply.
Method of operation
Primary switchmode power supplies are distinguished by a
high degree of efficiency and also by their compact
dimensions and moderate generation of heat. The mains
voltage is rectified directly. The rectified voltage is then
chopped with a higher frequency than that of the mains
frequency. A transformer (which can be quite small due to
the high switching frequency) converts the voltage with the
switching frequency to the required value.
Short Ciruit Protection
Short circuit protection is also built in so that if there is
a short circuit in the load circuit the power supply will
shutdown until the short circuit is removed, and will auto
start.
Mounting
Mounting types available are “DIN” rail mounting or chassis
/ panel mounting. Wall mount options are also available.
Redundancy
For redundant operation where two identical power supplies
are connected in parallel, for reliability and safety reasons
the use of diode auctioneering modules is necessary. In this
configuration there is no possibility of a back feed from one
power supply to the other and supply failure alarms can
be operated.
Load Sharing
When two or more power supplies are to be connected in
parallel for power sharing the output voltage of the power
supplies must be adjusted to be within 50mV of each other.
To achieve this the voltmeter being used must be accurate
and all test leads must be securely connected when making
the adjustment, not just held or pushed onto the terminals.
The method of wiring must also be done in the correct
configuration so as to avoid different wire lengths when
bridging the power supplies. If possible the use of a single
higher output power supply is a better option than parallel
connect smaller power supplies. It is often difficult to get
more than two parallel connected power supplies to
current share.
The voltage is now rectified and smoothed by a filter. This
regulator control itself is carried out by means of pulse-width
modulation. The on and off times of the chopper
transformers are regulated to ensure that the output voltage
remains stable.
Overload Protection
Overload thermal protection is built in to protect the power
supply if the load applied is in excess of the rated current,
for a period of time. This will shutdown the output until
the power supply cools down, and will need to be reset by
disconnecting and reconnecting the input supply.

Glossary
Glossary
AGM
Stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. AGM batteries belong to the
VRLA battery family which has the electrolyte absorbed in a
fiberglass mat separator. A gel cell has the electrolyte mixed
with silica dust to form an immobilized gel. Very thin glass
fibres are woven into a mat to increase surface area enough
to hold sufficient electrolyte on the cells for their lifetime.
Float Charge
Float Charge is the constant voltage that is applied
continuously to a voltaic cell/battery under operation. The
voltage could be held constant for the entire duration of
the battery cell‘s operation held for a particular phase of
charging by the charger. The appropriate float voltage varies
significantly with the chemistry and construction of the
battery, and ambient temperature. With the appropriate
voltage for the battery type and with proper temperature
compensation, a float charger may be kept connected
indefinitely without damaging the battery.
Hold-up time (mains-failure bridging time)
The hold-up time (also known as the mains-failure bridging
time) is the interval from the start of the mains outage to
the point in time when the output voltage can no longer be
maintained at its original level. The hold-up time indicates
how long a mains outage may last before it influences the
output voltage. For DC power supplies, EN 61204 requires a
bridging time of at least 20 ms.

Inrush current
The inrush current refers to the peak current that occurs
when turning on a consumer load. Switched-mode power
supplies have storage capacitors in the input which can
cause significant current peaks while the mains power
is being switched on. A variety of circuitry solutions can
be used to attenuate these current peaks. In the simplest
solution, an inrush limiter is used. Active switching
can be used in other cases. The peak current specification
indicates which upstream fuse should be used in the circuit.
If a fuse is selected which is too sensitive, it can trigger
when the mains power is switched on.
Interlock
The bridge link across the interlock terminals must be
removed to avoid unintended battery operation during
installation and initial test.
26
IU characteristic curve
The IU characteristic curve is a special output characteristic
curve that protects power supply units from overloads and
short circuits. It offers the best performance with regards
to overload and short circuit capabilities. A current limit
is activated at a specific current level (for example, 110
or 120% on the nominal rating). As the load continues to
increase, the output voltage is reduced according to the
current limit curve until it reaches a level approaching zero
volts. Thus a pulsating mode of operations is avoided for
short-term overloads. Large capacitive loads or motors
are brought back up along the slope of the current-limit
characteristic curve. After a short circuit or overload is
fixed, the IU characteristic curve offers the advantage
of immediately returning to the normal voltage control
mechanism. The full output voltage is then immediately
available. The IU characteristic curve is becoming the
established standard for modern power supplies.
Additional variants are available which pertain to the
peak current capacity and the slope of the current-limit
characteristic curve.

UPS
Uninterruptable Power Supply is a 3 stage device. Input
stage, charger for maintaining batteries, and output
stage. If the input power is reduced or drops, energy is
derived from the charged batteries to deliver power to
the output instantaneously.
VRLA Batteries
Stands for Valve Regulated Lead-Acid Battery. More
commonly known as a sealed lead-acid battery.
These batteries have a pressure relief valve which will
activate when the battery is recharged at high voltage.
VRLA batteries offer several advantages compared with
flooded lead–acid cells. The battery can be mounted in any
position, since the valves only operate on overpressure faults.
Since the battery system is designed to be recombinant
and eliminate the emission of gases on overcharge, room
ventilation requirements are reduced and no acid fume
is emitted during normal operation. The volume of free
electrolyte that could be released on damage to the case
or venting is very small. There is no need (nor possibility) to
check the level of electrolyte or to top up water lost due to
electrolysis, reducing inspection and maintenance.
