For error detection and error
messages as well as for monitoring
instrumentation, control and
automation circuits, Weidmüller
developed the VARITECTOR SPC,
its new families of surge protection
devices. The VARITECTOR SPC,
the pluggable surge protection, is
characterised by highest protective
functions with compact dimensions.
With the VARITECTOR SPC R modules,
error detection and error messages
are realized by internal monitoring. Up
to ten surge protection modules can
be combined to transmit a message
to the evaluation unit VARITECTOR
SPC Control Unit. The advantage of
all VARITECTOR SPC modules is that
they are designed to be removed or
exchanged during running operation
- without interrupting the measuring
circuit.
The V-TEST unit is used for testing the
function of the VARITECTOR SPC. It
ensures that maintenance intervals can
easily be adhered to, which is required
by IEC 62305.
For four binary signals or two analogue
signals in just 17.8 mm of space are
needed. The screw-free PE arrestor
connection reliably enables the
discharge of impulse currents up to 20
kA (8/20 μs) and 2.5 kA (10/350 μs)
via a grounded mounting rail.

The VARITECTOR SSC family of surge
protection devices for I&C circuits was
developed with compact terminal-like
dimensions (only 6.2 mm wide).
The VARITECTOR SSC family comprises
over 100 devices, thus being able
to offer a fitting solution for any kind
of surge protection. This protection
comprises current loops and binary
signals for 5 V, 12 V, 24 V, 48 V and
60 V. The terminals are equipped with
complete integrated surge protection
units or individual components such as
varistors.
Using a slotted-head Torx screw with
a locking torque of 0.8 to 1.0 Nm,
conductors ranging from 0.5 to 6 mm2
are connected providing proection
against vibration .
The safe discharge of surges up to 20
kA (8/20 μs) is realized by a snap-on
connection to the mounting rail. A
direct contact with the PE arrestor is
established and excellent discharge
properties are guaranteed for years.
EMC Set
For precise identification, all
VARITECTOR products are equipped
with large-scale marking capabilities:
Connections for equipment or
individual devices are labelled and the
various voltage levels are marked by a
colour code. Due to this, components
can be quickly identified in a switching
cabinet, thus simplifying both service
and commissioning.
All VARITECTOR SPC and SSC products
were tested in accordance with the
latest standards (IEC 61643-21): In
classes D1, C1 and C2, they fulfil the
safe short-circuit mode when units fail
to overload of required.
The EMC set offers additional
convenience for connections with
shielded cables. The EMC set consists
of the EMC connector, i.e. the shield
connector, and cable ties with shield
cover EMC tie. The conductor shield
can easily be connected to the
clamping yoke connections of the
VARITECTOR SPC modules.

PROTECTION OF ANALOGUE SIGNALS
Protection of analogue signals and
current loops (CL)
In practice, the most common signals
are analogue signals, also called
current-loop signals. In most cases,
analogue signals are needed to
verify limit values (e.g., maximum or
minimum temperature). Mostly, these
signals are used for long distances.

In practice, for example two-wire,
threewire and four-wire measurements

defined states are also called logical
values.

Up to ten VSPC surge protection
modules can be incorporated into one
monitoring circuit. Using the V-Control
unit, also line breaks or interruptions in
the circuit can be signaled.
For binary signals, there are two kinds
of surge protection components
available - those with a common
reference potential and those without.
Two-wire connections are usually made
with a common reference potential.
These signals are for example signals
from binary sensors, actuators or
indicators.
Practical examples include:
- Limit switches
- Push buttons
- Position sensors
- Photoelectric detectors
- Contactors
- Solenoid valves
- Signal lamps
The surge protection for floatingground (FG) models of binary signals
is used in all applications, in which
potential shifts may occur. These are
mainly signals received in the field
and transported over long distances.
With this model, a gas discharge tube
is introduced in series between the
PE and the surge protection. This gas
discharge tube inhibits coupling via PE.
The surge protection for grounded
models of binary signals is used
mainly in those fields, in which all
signals are laid directly to one star point
or to one potential.

and with categories D1, C1, C2 and C3
according to IEC 61643-22.

The V-Test is a compact, portable instrument for the
Varitector SPC pluggable surge protection (VSPC series) and
surge protection for power distribution, PUI and II series.
With this instrument, the Weidmüller surge protection can be
tested for protective function in accordance with the required
test periods as stipulated by IEC62305 (DIN VDE 185 Part 3).
In a backlit display, the measurement result is indicated with
„ok“ or „not ok“ for each component.
