500 SERIES FIXED TEMPERATURE/RATE-OF-RISE HEAT DETECTORS DESCRIPTION The FCI Series 500 is a dual-action heat detector using two independent methods of detection. The rate-of-rise feature detects fires that grow rapidly in intensity by responding when the rate of temperature rise exceeds 15o F (9o C) per minute. The fixed temperature element is independent of rate-of-rise. It consists of a phosphor-bronze spring held under tension by a spot of fusible eutectic alloy which melts when heated to its rated temperature, releasing the spring and closing the contacts. The different models are marked with unique paint schemes in the center of the dome. The contacts are normally open, SPST, and rated 1.0 amp @ 6-24 volts DC. The detector is 3 3/16" diameter by 2 3/16" high, (8.1 x 5.6 cm) and is surface mounted. It can be mounted on a 3 or 4-inch electrical box when used with a model AR5 adapter plate. The units are available in explosion-proof and combined weather and moisture-proof versions. The explosion-proof models are UL Listed and FM Approved for Class I, Groups C and D, and Class II, Groups E, F and G.
