Marvell 88EM8189 Intelligent LED Controller for Smart Wireless Light Bulbs - Integrated I2C Interface and Standby Power Supply for Networking Circuit PRODUCT OVERVIEW The Marvell® 88EM8189 is a single-stage AC/DC constant current, intelligent LED controller featuring an integrated I2C compatible interface. The I2C interface connects to networking microcontrollers to provide digital dimming through ZigBee®, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, PLC and other technologies. Additionally, the 88EM8189 has an energy efficient on-chip AC-DC converter for bias power supply to the networking microcontroller that enables meeting ENERGY STAR power consumption <500mW in standby mode (when light is off). Used in conjunction with Marvell’s 88MZ100 ZigBee microcontroller; the 88EM8189 is part of two-chip solution that accelerates the development of smart wireless lighting with a low cost BOM and quick time to market. Moreover, the 88EM8189 enables smart bulbs to be backward compatible to phase cut wall dimmers, providing flick-free dimming performance. Marvell LED technology, based on its own intellectual property (IP), provides assurance in best performance, lowest cost and highest reliability. These IPs include innovative phased cut dimmer control algorithms, primary current sensing and control algorithms, pulse width modulation (PWM) control algorithms, fault detection and control algorithms, and thermal management algorithms. The 88EM8189 can be used in either Buck-Boost (non-isolated) or Flyback (isolated) design topologies. 88EM8189 TYPICAL FLYBACK APPLICATIONS SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM L1 T2 C11 C6 R4 BD1 R11 R12 D5 14 PSVR 10 DIM 9 12 11 RSNS GND 13 8 VDD SW 7 DIS R3 GND 6 DISABLE C7 Naux 5 I2C DATA R1 88EM8189 SCLK SDATA 4 D2 VDC NTC Vbias 15 3 TRIAC I2C CLK VDC 2 R22 NC C14 16 HV D9 FB FB 1 HV HV D7 LED + LED - C5 C4 C3 D3 R9 Q1 R7 C8 D1 R6 R2 L4 VBAT VDC I2C CLK 88MZ100 (ZigBee) I2C DATA DISABLE C12 R15 FB R16 Fig 1. 88EM8189 Typical Application Block Diagram – Flyback (Isolated) Design KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS KEY FEATURES BENEFITS • Integrated I2C interface to networking microcontroller •• High efficiency - up to 88% with dimmer and 90% without dimmer •• On-chip AC-DC converter for bias power supply to the networking microcontroller that enables meeting ENERGY STAR power consumption <500mW in standby mode •• High power factor (> 0.95) • Accurate primary side current regulation •• Low THD (<20%) and EMI Marvell 88EM8189 KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS continued KEY FEATURES BENEFITS •• Active power factor correction •• Lowest component cost in its class - Eliminates opto-coupler and secondary feedback circuit - Eliminates startup power supply circuit - Fewest number of components in dimmer damping and bleeding circuits - Eliminates power supply circuit for networking chip •• On-chip high voltage start-up circuit •• Smallest driver PCB space in its class - Fits in vast majority of replacement bulb form factors - Supports single layer PCB design •• Thermal foldback for improved reliability •• Increased reliability due to fewer power components and less power loss •• Built-in protection for open circuit, short circuit, and over-temperature •• Reduced design time due to high level of integration and intelligence on the chip •• Pulse-skipping for low standby power consumption •• SOIC-16 package •• Operating temperature: -40 to +105°C (Tj = 150°C max) Fig 2. 88EM8189 IC Front / Back (enlarged) Fig 3. 88EM8189 Reference Design Front / Back (reduced) TARGET APPLICATIONS The Marvell 88EM8189 is ideally suited for the following LED lighting applications: • Smart light bulbs • Wireless fixtures THE MARVELL ADVANTAGE: Marvell chipsets come with complete reference designs which include board layout designs, software, manufacturing diagnostic tools, documentation, and other items to assist customers with product evaluation and production.
