A goal of this effort is to show the simplicity of incorporating the LMH2 LED module into an existing luminaire and the six‑step process has been modified accordingly. This reference design is based on two common wall‑wash luminaires: a Quad compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) luminaire and a halogen luminaire. We retrofitted each of them with an LMH2 LED module to match each luminaire’s color temperature, light output and light distribution on a wall. The methodology Define lighting requirements There are no ENERGY STAR® requirements for wall-wash luminaires. The DesignLights Consortium® (DLC) provides requirements for a wall-wash luminaire, shown in Table 1.1 However, the goal of this reference design is to match the comparison luminaires’ color temperature, light output and light distribution on a wall and the DLC requirements are provided as a reference, not as a design goal. CFL Retrofit The comparison seven‑inch CFL recessed wall‑wash luminaire had a CCT of approximately 3500 K. For warranty information, please contact Cree Sales at [email protected]. 2 LMH2 LED Module Wall‑wash Reference Design Halogen Retrofit The comparison six‑inch PAR30 halogen recessed wall‑wash luminaire had a CCT of approximately 3000 K. We removed the light source and replaced it with a flat lens LMH2 LED module providing 850 lm and a 3000 K CCT.4 This fixture is enclosed in a housing and we attached the LMH2 LED module to the optional Cree heat sink that is designed to work with this and other LMH2 module lumen levels.5 Optic We made a reflector, shown in Figure 3, from white reflective paper.6 We applied this to both versions of the LMH2 LED module wall‑wash luminaire to direct the light output toward a wall. Each comparison luminaire had a prismatic diffuser to spread the light output evenly, plastic in the CFL luminaire and glass in the halogen luminaire. We measured each LMH2 LED module luminaire twice, once with the provided prismatic diffuser and once replacing the provided diffuser with a commercially available diffuser.7 Figure 3: Wall-wash reflector Driver To shorten the development time for this reference design and because its performance is well known to us, we used the Cree LMD125 driver, shown in Figure 4.8 This driver features TRIAC dimming and operates at 100‑120 V with a power factor of 0.97 with the 850‑lm LMH2 LED module and 0.99 with the 1250‑lm LMH2 LED module. Other driver options are available from suppliers that participate in the Driver Compatibility Program (DCP). Figure 4: Driver Results Following are the results of retrofitting each comparison luminaire with an LMH2 LED module. Thermal Results The measured case temperature (Tc) of the LMH2 LED module wall‑wash luminaires was 65 °C for the CFL retrofit luminaire and 70 °C for the halogen retrofit luminaire. Both temperatures are within the acceptable operating range for the LMH2 LED module. For warranty information, please contact Cree Sales at [email protected]. 3 LMH2 LED Module Wall‑wash Reference Design Optical and Electrical Results We obtained the results in Table 2 by testing the luminaires using a 2‑meter integrating sphere and a Type C goniophotometer.9 As the table shows, each LMH2 LED module wall‑wash luminaire closely matches the light output of the light source it replaces using 62% less power than the CFL and 86% less power than the halogen luminaire. The LMH2 LED module wall-wash luminaires also greatly exceed the efficacy of the comparison luminaires. Table 3 and Table 4 show the illuminance displayed as true color, with a computed illuminance contour, and false color, where the illuminance contours are amplified by the use of a rainbow of colors. Illuminance (false color), shows relative brightness distribution. Illuminance (true color), shows relative brightness distribution in real color with contour lines.10 The illuminance of the LMH2 LED module luminaires compares favorably to that of the comparison luminaires. 9 Testing was performed at Cree’s Santa Barbara Technology Center and Durham Technology Center. 10 Both the false color and true color scales are dynamic, calculated on a per-image basis. The simulated room is 15 ft X 15 ft (4.6 m) with a 12‑ft (3.7‑m) ceiling. Four luminaires are simulated 3 ft (0.9 m) apart, evenly spaced in a row in the ceiling. Simulated illumination is shown for the luminaires when mounted 3 ft (0.9 m) and 4 ft (1.2 m) from the wall at which their output is directed. Illuminance values on that wall are shown at 1‑ft (0.3‑m) vertical intervals aligned with the two middle luminaires in the row (denoted by WW in the table) and for the midpoint between the two middle luminaires (denoted by Mid in the table). For warranty information, please contact Cree Sales at [email protected]. 13 Emin / E 0 Pa LMH2 LED Module Wall‑wash Reference Design Conclusions This reference design illustrates the light output and efficacy of wall‑wash luminaires based on the Cree LMH2 LED module. 850and 1250‑lm flat lens models of the Cree LMH2 LED module replaced the light sources of two commercially available luminaires and matched their light output and light pattern using significantly less energy. The high CRI of these luminaires makes them suitable for such demanding markets as retail, museums, hospitality and restaurants, in which excellent color rendering is a high priority. The absence of infrared and ultraviolet radiation from these luminaires means that light will not damage an illuminated product. LMH2 LED modules offer a wide range of lumen levels and CCTs, so there is considerable flexibility in using an LMH2 LED module in a wall-wash luminaire. The overall performance of the Cree LMH2 LED module makes it an attractive design option for an LED-based wallwash luminaire.
