MCU SOLUTIONS Optical Module Solutions Silicon Labs’ small, powerful MCUs are a proven solution FEATURES • Precision 12-bit Analog-to-Digital convertors with differential mode inputs • Integrated precision temperature sensor • On-chip precision 12-bit Digital-to-Analog convertors • Fast CPU (up to 50 MIPS) for real-time control and fast interrupt response • Industry’s smallest MCU package options, down to 2 mm x 2 mm • Flash EEPROM for storage of non-volatile data to implement SFF-8472 Digital Diagnostic Interface DESCRIPTION OPTICAL MODULES Several generations of Silicon Labs MCUs have been developed to operate at the heart of optical transceiver modules and are in full production in millions of optical modules today. Their popularity in this application is due to the combination of the high speed CPU and integrated precision analog peripherals in the industry’s smallest packages. All required system functions – such as oscillator, flash EEPROM and temperature sensor – have been integrated into the MCU so that no additional external components are required. In addition there are many more options with CPU speeds up to 100 MIPS, memory sizes up to 128 K bytes of flash EEPROM and package sizes down to 2 mm x 2 mm. A hardware 16 x 16 MAC (multiply-and-accumulate) module is available on many of the MCUs to assist with complex math requirements. All Silicon Labs MCUs share the same proven development environment and they are all software compatible. There is also significant hardware compatibility, in many cases designers can drop in a higher or lower memory sized version to optimize cost based on the firmware requirements of the system.
