Data Communication Program Information
Voice communication frequencies between pilots and air traffic control (ATC) are becoming
increasingly congested and will not be able to accommodate the projected increase in air traffic
demand. Use of Data Communications (Data Comm) to supplement some routine voice
communications will increase efficiency, capacity, and safety.

Data Comm Segment 1 Phase 1 Minimum Avionics Requirements -- Tower Services –
Controller Pilot Data Link Communications Departure Clearance (CPDLC DCL)
o CPDLC: FANS 1/A or FANS 1/A+
o

Communication: VDL Mode 2 (with multi frequency capability preferred) or
Plain Old ACARS (POA or VDL Mode 0)
Data Comm Segment 1 Phase 1 -- En Route CPDLC Services

CPDLC – FANS 1/A or FANS 1/A+
o
Communications: VDL Mode 2 with multi frequency *
*PARC CWG is currently investigating the use of POA and other media in En
Route domestic airspace.
