ZL40162 / 7 VOLTAGE FEEDBACK AMPLIFIERS ANALOG Best-in-Class Feature Set High linearity produces a Multi-tone Power Ratio (MTPR) of -70dBC, which meets requirements for reach and data rate in ADSL applications. Best combination of noise voltage and noise current enhances performance in high impedance drive conditions. Supply rejection ratio of 81dB and common mode rejection ratio of 70dBc enhance system stability during interference. The ZL™40162 and ZL40167 are high-performance, dualmatched voltage feedback amplifiers that offer the industry’s most comprehensive set of best-in-class features at a low cost. Based on a novel, balanced amplifier design, the new broadband amplifiers support high bandwidth while optimizing noise performance, output drive, stability and quiescent current. The ZL40162 is designed to meet the high linearity requirements of ADSL modems, while the ZL40167 optimizes differential gain performance ideal for a wide range of applications including NTSC composite video systems, active filters, pulse delay filters, and A to D drivers. Zarlink’s ZL40162 and ZL40167 also feature robust surge tolerance, able to absorb high latch up levels and Electro Static Discharge (ESD) stress. In some applications, this may enable customers to reduce the amount of primary and secondary protection, thereby reducing system cost. Applications Ultra-low quiescent current optimizes battery life in portable equipment. Optimized differential gain and differential phase noise of 0.003% and 0.07 degrees ideal for processing NTSC composite video. High unity gain bandwidth of >250MHz supports wide range of high-speed applications. Low temperature stable offset of <+/-4mV enables DC coupled solutions, and eliminates requirementfor external coupling capacitors. Robust Surge Tolerance Output and supply pins withstand 4kV human body ESD, while differential inputs tolerate 1.25 kV ESD. All ports survive full JEDEC latch up test of +/- 100mA for 100mS. Ease of Use ADSL PCI modem cards Pin-compatible with industry-standard pin-out for dual op amps. xDSL external modems Line drivers Operate from 5V to 12V single supply or +/- 2.5V to +/- 6.6V. The application board, and the ZL40162/67 amplifiers are supported by Zarlink’s network of in-house field application and design engineers. ZL40162 / 7 VOLTAGE FEEDBACK AMPLIFIERS ANALOG The diagram below illustrates how Zarlink’s ZL40162 and ZL40167 can be connected as differential line drivers in ADSL modem applications. The novel, balanced architecture of the ZL40162 delivers excellent common mode rejection, supply rejection, and second order distortion performance. As a result, ADSL modem designers can easily meet the high linearity and low distortion levels required of ADSL systems. The ZL40167 is a high-speed amplifier that offers excellent AC performance over a wide bandwidth, making it ideal for the line pre-driver stage. With stable offset over a wide temperature range, the ZL40162 allows a DC coupled design to be used without compromising performance. This approach eliminates requirements for external decoupling capacitors and avoids the need for alignment thereby reducing system-level cost. Operating as the line driver, the ZL40162 achieves high output current with low harmonic distortion as required in DSL applications. The device amplifies the signal and provides drive and impedance matching to deliver signals up to 18.8Vpp swing into a 25 Ohm load. This supports the peak upstream power levels for full-rate ADSL systems. Zarlink’s voltage feedback amplifiers are based on a highperformance HJV complementary bipolar process. The process enables the amplifiers to support wide bandwidth levels typically achieved using alternative, current-feedback approaches, while fully exploiting the benefits of a voltage feedback architecture: low offset, low offset drift, low noise, and low quiescent current. The ZL40162 and ZL40167 are pin compatible with the industry standard for dual op amps. As a result, the devices can easily be dropped into next-generation designs, allowing engineers to quickly realize cost and performance benefits. The devices are manufactured at Zarlink’s own high-performance fab, which ensures security of supply and on-time volume delivery.
