President: Hiroshi Takeuchi New product developed; Compact SMD-type TCXO (size:7 x 5 mm) with an improved maximum operating temperature of +105°C Nihon Dempa Kogyo Co., Ltd. (NDK) has developed a new compact SMD-type temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) (size: 7 x 5 x 2 mm, model No. NT7050BB), featuring a maximum operating temperature as high as +105°C (improved from the previous range of -40 to +85°C). This TCXO is intended for use as a reference signal sources in small-cell base stations such as femto-cells. Small-cell base stations are expected to be installed more and more in the future to reduce the heavier loads placed on macro-cell base stations in proportion to increasing the amount of mobile communication data traffic. As these small-cell base stations need to be compact, lightweight, low powered, and low costed, their design needs to be simplified as much as possible and the temperature control function equipped in macro-cell base stations is eliminated. Consequently the electronic parts and devices mounted in small-cell base stations will be directly exposed to substantial changes in outside air temperatures, and need to be capable of maintaining stable performance in especially high-temperature environments. To meet these needs, NDK has developed the compact (7 x 5 mm) TCXO with a maximum operating temperature of +105°C (up from the previous +85°C) while maintaining its outstanding properties, including a frequency range from 10 to 25 MHz, a frequency/temperature characteristic of up to 500ppb, and a current consumption of up to 6 mA. The new product is useful in the design of smaller communication systems with higher temperature tolerance for small-cell base stations and other backbone networks. Engineering sample delivery is scheduled for this month, and the start of mass production is scheduled for October 2014.
