Board Level
The ET-5MS-OEM is a board level product meaning that it is supplied as fully populated
and functional circuit board that is designed to be integrated into a final application. It
does not come with any enclosure or mounting standoffs. It incorporates mounting holes
to facilitate installation as a “piggy-back” board on another circuit board assembly.

The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 shares common firmware with SIXNET’s standard packaged managed switches such
as the ET-5MS, ET-9MS and ET-9MG. Therefore, it supports the same advanced software features.

3.3 Firmware
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 is pre-installed with SIXNET managed switch firmware which provides the software
capabilities as previously described. SIXNET periodically releases firmware updates that may include
performance improvements, bug fixes and/or new features.
These firmware updates are typically supplied in two formats:
1. Full Firmware Image File – This can be loaded from one of SIXNET’s Microsoft Windows
utilities. It will completely replace the operating system and firmware and set all parameters back
to the factory defaults. This method requires both an Ethernet and serial connection to the switch.
2. Firmware Update File – This is a tarball (.tgz) file that can be loaded from the web or terminal
interface’s Update Firmware screen. It typically will update the switch firmware from one version
to the next. It typically will retain the switches parameters so the switch configuration does not
need to be reloaded afterwards.
3.4 Ethernet Connector with Ethernet Ports 1 – 4
Ports 1-4 may be accessed either through a ribbon cable connector or through a 0.8mm pitch 2x20 pin female
header. See section 3.1.1 for orderable part numbers and options.
* The chassis ground connections in between each pair are meant to work as a shielding barrier and as a
potential surge sink for ESD. It is recommended that the other end of this connector has good grounding
points to its enclosure to improve the surge dissipation throughout the metal body. In case the former is
not possible, the chassis ground in between pins should still help as protection in the event a surge travels
down the signal pins. As a special modification, the chassis ground may be disconnected in case isolation
is an issue. Contact SIXNET for details.
** All four of these ports are identical in functionality. SIXNET can swap the order of the ports in
software so it makes no difference how they are physically connected internally. SIXNET chose the
above internal connections because they made for the best trace layout.

Some MII devices use the RXER and TXER signals to indicate errors. The switch IC used in this board does
not support this feature. In order to maintain compatibility, the signal RXER on the mating device should
be tied to ground. TXER may be left floating.
* Important Note: On the switch IC the internal pull-ups for the P5_OUTD# signals may be too weak
and the interface may fall into in an unknown state if the device it is hooked up to has internal pull downs.
Therefore, it is required to put on the interface board a pull-up (to 3.3V) and optionally a pull-down
resistor position for each of these four signals (P5_OUTD0, P5_OUTD1, P5_OUTD2 and P5_OUTD3).
This is a total of 8 resistors.
The following table explains the most common interface configuration options:
Interface mode
P5_OUTD3-0
100Mbps FD PHY.
25MHz output clock
1111
100Mbps FD MAC.
25MHz input clock
1010
“1” is a pull up resistor to 3.3V, “0” is a pull down resistor to GND. The recommended resistor size for the pullups/downs is 4.7K. When connecting a PHY to this MII interface (option 1010), make sure to assign it an
address of “5. Do not rely on internal pull up/down resistors, use external resistors of the appropriate value.

3.8 Status LED Output
This signal is an output that can be tied to an external status LED. The status LED will generally be ON when
operation is normal and flashes when a fill firmware image is being loaded. Refer to the SIXNET managed
switch software user manual for more details.
3.9 OK LED / Output
This signal is an output that can be tied to an external discrete output circuit, an external LED and/or an
external input. It will be ON (supply 3.3V) when operation is normal and go OFF when there is a fault. Refer
to the SIXNET managed switch software user manual for more details.
3.10 CPU Reset Input
This signal is an active low debounced manual reset input. If pulled low it will cause a full reset of the ET5MS-OEM-2-1 circuit board. The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 has a built in reset, this control line would be used
when another CPU needs to reset the entire ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 board. If this signal is not used, it should be
left unconnected.
3.11 Ethernet Port 0
Ethernet port 0 is available on the board-to-board connector. This port can be used as an additional 10/100
Mbps Ethernet connection. The following signals are available:

The TX and RX lines should be connected to a component such as a PULSE J0011D11 (integrated magnetics
RJ45 jack). Its center taps should have a 2.5V (+/- 5%) supply hooked up to them along with a 0.1uF bypass
capacitor on each center tap. If using a dedicated regulator for this purpose, plan on having at least 100mA
capability. No other components are required since the terminations are already on the SIXNET board. If
using a separate magnetic-RJ45 jack arrangement, add the proper unused twisted pair line terminations. Use
the datasheet of the PULSE J0011D11 as reference.

3.12 Mechanical and Mounting
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 has four mounting holes for #4 screws. Refer to the following mechanical diagrams
for board size, connector positions and component heights.

a) Drill sizes on 0.062” thick boards: plated +0.003/-0.002”; non-plated +0.002/-0.000”
b) Minimum trace width and spacing 0.008 / 0.008 +/- 0.001”

3.13 Temperature
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 has been designed to operate continuously at an ambient temperature of -40 to +75º C
or better.
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 has been designed for full operation after being stored at -40 to 85º C or better.
3.14 Power
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 requires a regulated 3.3 VDC to be supplied to the designated pins on the board to
board connector. There are at least four power and four ground pins.
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 is designed to draw 2 Watts (or less) at 3.3 VDC with ports 1-4 linked at 100 Mbps.
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 will automatically draw less power when ports are not used.
3.15 Electrical Shielding
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 is designed to meet the CE and FCC requirements for emissions and immunity when
properly installed in an appropriate package. Some of the techniques used to insure this performance are as
follows:
• Chassis ground around perimeter of all layers
• Chassis ground stapled between layers with two rows of Vias staggered with 0.05” spacing
• Chassis ground tied to all four mounting holes for grounding to other board or chassis
• Chassis ground tied to Ethernet interface for connection to connectors and/or enclosure
• Separate ground layer
• Separate power layer
• Via fences where necessary
• No digital signals between PHY and Ethernet interface
• No power and ground planes under magnetics
•
3.16 Maintainability and Reliability
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 is designed using common components and design techniques as other SIXNET
industrial Ethernet switches that have a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of over 1,000,000 hours. This is
based on actual performance numbers of units already in the field. The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 is expected to have
a similar reliability. At the time of this writing, insufficient field data exists to certify this in any manner other
than “Type Certification” based upon history of similar products.
The ET-5MS-OEM-2-1 is not designed to be repaired in the field. The board can be swapped out by
unplugging the Ethernet connector and removing the four mounting screws.
