A voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) enables the output frequency to be
varied (’pulled’) by means of an external control voltage. When this control voltage
is an analogue of frequency the VCXO controls operating frequency. A block
diagram of VCXO control and operation is shown opposite.
Euroquartz manufactures a comprehensive range of voltage-controlled crystal
oscillators to suit the majority of industry applications. The VCXO range embraces
a wide frequency range from 500kHz to 160MHz. All-important is the choice of
pull range, here Euroquartz offers either a ‘narrow’ pull range of ±30ppm or a
‘wide’ pull range of ±50ppm to ±300ppm as required. Available packages include
standard through-hole dual-in-line packages and miniature SMD formats.

Oven-controlled Crystal Oscillators (OCXO) provide stable
output frequencies from ±0.005ppm over a wide operating
temperature range.
Whereas Temperature-compensated Crystal Oscillators (TCXO)
utilize a resistor/capacitor compensation network to counter
frequency change due to temperature fluctuation, the crystal
within an OCXO is ‘ovenized’, in that it is maintained at a
constant temperature. This technique ensures that the crystal is
unaffected by ambient temperature changes and therefore
provides a very stable output frequency.

The OCXO oven consists of a proportional heater (a power
transistor) and an automatic gain control (AGC) circuit. A

One of the strengths of the Euroquartz operation is provided by
Euroquartz Manufacturing, sited in a purpose-built manufacturing
unit of some 1,208 sq. metres. (13,000 sq. ft.) The Euroquartz
factory incorporates research and development, engineering,
production control, manufacturing processes and quality
assurance departments.
In conjunction with the UK Defence Research Establishment,
Euroquartz have designed and developed a range of oscillators
able to withstand ionizing radiation experienced in upper
atmosphere and space applications. Full details of the product

CRYSTAL PRODUCTION
QUALIFICATION APPROVAL
OPTICAL
Quartz crystal production begins with the selection of quartz
crystal blanks of the appropriate thickness and cut orientation
from our comprehensive crystal blank library. Subsequent
processes include lapping, polishing and contouring operations
designed to produce quartz crystal blanks with precisely specified
size, shape, orientation and surface finish to ensure the desired
electrical properties of the finished products.
ELECTRICAL
The optical stages of production are followed by electrical
processes including etching and cleaning, vacuum deposition of
gold or silver electrodes, mounting and bonding, adjustment to
final frequency, encapsulation, marking and final quality
assurance inspection.
OSCILLATOR PRODUCTION
Oscillator units are fabricated using both thick film hybrid
substrates and printed circuit board techniques. Depending upon
the application the oscillator crystal may be incorporated as an
independently sealed unit or as an un-encapsulated crystal blank.
In the latter case the blank is mounted directly onto the oscillator
substrate and the completed assembly is adjusted to final
frequency before hermetic sealing. Products produced by
Euroquartz Manufacturing oscillator department include standard
HCMOS/TTL oscillators, VCXOs, TCXOs, and OCXOs, the latter
components requiring a much greater input by engineering and
quality assurance departments.
FILTER PRODUCTION
Crystal filters consist of a number of discrete crystal or monolithic
dual elements assembled on a printed circuit board with other
passive components (inductors, transformers, capacitors etc.), the
whole unit being hermetically sealed in a metal enclosure. The
basic manufacturing steps for filter production are crystal units,
printed circuit board assembly, filter alignment, encapsulation and
final test. Euroquartz also manufacture many non-crystal
components used in custom filter production including coil
winding.
