Date: APRIL 1999 Code: 01120/20 Evo-Stik Intugard Sealant Intumescent Sealant for Fire Resistant Doors Features Uses • Evo-Stik Intugard can be used in the following areas: • • • • Tested to BS476 : Part 8 : 1972 to assist fire doors to achieve half hour or one hour fire resistance as appropriate. Easy to apply. Can be overpainted. Contains no solvent - safe in use. Gives a superior smooth finish. Evo-Stik Intugard is a specially developed paste for placing by gun in grooves in the edges of doors or door frames. When the gap between the door and frame is subjected to heat, Evo-Stik Intugard intumesces so that the gap is sealed to the passage of hot smoke and flame for a period consistent with the fire resistance rating of the door. As Evo-Stik Intugard can be sanded and overpainted the final appearance of the door is far superior to solid strip methods of fire resistance. In fire resistant door set construction. Evo-Stik Intugard is extruded into grooves, 10 mm wide x 3 mm deep, cut in the frame or door edge. One groove for a ‘half hour door’ and two grooves for a ‘one hour door’ is the normal recommendation for fire resistant doors constructed to satisfactory standard in other respects. The intumescing properties have also proved very useful in connection with the use of Evo-Stik Intugard as a bedding compound for metallic door furniture. Upgrading of doors to fire resistant standard. Ordinary panel doors can be upgraded to a half hour resistant standard by filling in the panels with plaster board, bonding 4 mm plywood to both faces and placing Evo-Stik Intugard in a 10 mm wide x 3 mm deep continuous groove around the sides and top door edges. Shelf Life At least 6 months when stored in a dry place within the temperature range 5ºC-30ºC. Packaging C20 cartridges in cartons of 12. Constitution Evo-Stik Intugard is a vinyl emulsion with intumescing agents. Colour White. Quantity Guide Allowing for normal wastage, the contents of each cartridge is sufficient for approximately 6 m x 10 mm x 3 mm groove. Precautions in Use Evo-Stik Intugard does not present any particular hazard during use. Nevertheless, should skin contact occur, wash thoroughly with soap and water before the material dries. If the material has dried, use a hand cleanser. Do not use solvent. Should the material be swallowed, seek medical advice. Method of Use IMPORTANT Before embarking on any work involving Evo-Stik Intugard, the section headed ‘Precautions in Use’ and the separate Safety Data Sheet must be carefully studied by those carrying out the work. Surface Preparation Evo-Stik Intugard should be applied to clean, dry freshly cut grooves in the timber. Metal components, e.g. door furniture, should be wiped with a clean absorbent cloth to remove any residual grease or dust. Storage Store in a dry place within the temperature range 10ºC-30ºC. Protect from frost. Spillage and Disposal Scrape up spilt sealant and reserve for disposal. Emptied cartridges and waste sealant are not classified as ‘Special Waste’ as defined by the Special Waste Regulations 1996 and may be disposed of as general waste. Application Prepare 10 mm wide x 3 mm deep grooves in the frame or edge of the door. Ensure that Evo-Stik Intugard has been stored within the temperature range stated, so that it will be easy to extrude and apply. Cut the cartridge nozzle at the point required to provide a suitable diameter of bead of paste. Cut off the dome at the top of the cartridge without damaging the thread and screw the nozzle onto it. Fit the cartridge into the caulking gun and extrude the sealant into the groove. Ensure that Evo-Stik Intugard is forced into the groove so that the surfaces are completely wetted and no voids or gaps are left. An excess of Evo-Stik Intugard should be left proud of the timber surface, about 2-3 mm, to allow for shrinkage on drying. Produce the correct shape by forcing the bead into the groove with a profiled scraper. When dry, (after approx. 24 hours) sand the surface of Evo-Stik Intugard flush with the timber. Any small defects can be made good by brush applying Evo-Stik Intugard to which some water has been added. This can normally be sanded after about 90 minutes drying. The filled groove and door edge may be painted with a two coat alkyd decorative system or varnished with a clear alkyd-based varnish without impairing the performance of the seal in a fire situation.
