Available measurements: Frequency, High pulse width, Low pulse width, Duty cycle, Cycle time, DC voltage, AC voltage, Peak to peak, Crest factor, Minimum, Maximum, Risetime, Falltime, Rising rate, Falling rate, Voltage at cursor, Time at cursor, Frequency at cursor, Amplitude at cursor, Peak frequency, Peak amplitude, Second to sixth harmonic amplitude, Total Power,THD,THD+N,SFDR,SINAD,SNR,IMD & Gain. 5 Virtual Instrumentation ○ ○ The spectrum analyser shows the amount of energy in each of a number of frequency bands. It is especially useful for tracking down the cause of noise in measured signals. As an example, a peak at 50 or 60Hz would suggest noise due to mains pick up. Higher frequency peaks may be easily identified as switching noise from power supplies or noise from digital circuits. An averaging mode is provided to reduce the effects of random noise and a peak detect mode is useful for testing amplifier bandwidths. ADC-40 & 42 ADC-100 Virtual Instrumentation Low cost single channel High resolution, general use ▼ Low cost ▼ 12 bit resolution ▼ No power supply required ▼ Dual channel ▼ Compact design ▼ 9 voltage ranges ▼ Oscilloscope and data logging software included ▼ Oscilloscope and data logging software included The ADC-40 and ADC-42 are single channel PC based oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers and multimeters. Simply plug a unit into the parallel port of your PC and run the supplied PicoScope software. The ADC-100 is a dual channel oscilloscope, spectrum analyser and multimeter. It connects to the parallel port using the supplied cable and requires no power supply. This makes it very useful as a general purpose test instrument both out in the field and in the lab. For a higher speed version, consider also the ADC-212 (Page 8). For low frequency signals, the units provide all the functionality of conventional scopes at a fraction of the price. The ADC-40 has 8 bit resolution, whilst the ADC-42 has a 12 bit resolution which makes it more suitable for measuring small signal changes, both on the scope and spectrum analyser. Probes and Test Leads We supply a range of probes and test teads, including a differential probe for mains voltage measurements. Please see page 30. These two products are ideal for situations where budget is important. The units provide large, colourful displays and all the usual timebases and trigger options, all in a case slightly larger than a matchbox. These features, combined with their low cost, make the ADC-40 and ADC-42 perfect as educational and training tools. For example, to find a fault with a fire or burglar alarm, the ADC200 can be left running overnight with its ‘save to disk on trigger’ option enabled. When the fault occurs, a trace will be saved to disk complete with a time/date stamp. To locate errors in digital signals, the display overwrite option can be used to highlight erroneous events even if they only occur once. ADC-212 and ADC-216 High Resolution Oscilloscope / Spectrum Analyser The ADC-216 is a high resolution, high precision oscilloscope. The unit is accurate to 1% and has 16 bit resolution. This makes it ideal for measuring vibrations, noise and audio signals. The ADC-216 has a large 32k waveform buffer, therefore it is possible to capture the most complicated signals, then expand the areas of interest to show finer detail. ▼ High resolution and precision ▼ Ideal for automotive fault finding ▼ 32k Sample memory ▼ Oscilloscope and data logging software included Virtual Instrumentation In digital electronics a signal change of 1% is usually no problem, but in audio electronics 0.1% distortion or noise can be a disaster. Conventional DSO’s only offer 8 bit resolution, so can detect at best a 0.4% signal change. This means that they are unsuitable for many applications ranging from monitoring sensors and transducers to detecting noise and vibration. Precision oscilloscopes require more than 8 bit resolution. As well as resolution, noise is an issue. The amplifiers that make up the ‘front end’ of a conventional DSO are designed to have a high bandwidth. Low noise is not a priority and so 1% noise figures are typical. The designer of a 16 bit oscilloscope has a tough job, noise must be kept below 0.0015% (15ppm), otherwise the extra resolution will be swallowed up by noise. For high-end professional testing the ADC-216 is hard to beat. For general purpose work the ADC-212 is ideal. The ADC-212 through a combination of oversampling, digital filtering and software averaging can actually improve on this theoretical 72dB. The ADC-216 with its 16 bit resolution (65536 steps) has close to 100dB of dynamic range. To put these figures in context a typical tape deck would have 40 to 50dB of dynamic range, a quality power amplifier 70 to 80dB and a top end CD player 80 to 90dB. The two key specifications for an FFT analyser are sampling rate and dynamic range. A spectrum analyser will be able to display up to one half of the maximum sampling rate. To cover the entire 20kHz audio band this calls for a sampling rate in excess of 40ksps. If you are interested in testing the frequency response of amplifiers you may wish to look well beyond the 20kHz point so a higher sampling rate is required. The specifications of Pico ADCs are summarised in the table below: The dynamic range of the spectrum analyser is the next most important consideration. Most oscilloscopes (whether PC based or benchtop) have an 8 bit resolution (256 steps). This limits spectrum analysis to 48dB of dynamic range (20log256) The ADC40 and ADC-200 are both 8 bit devices. Unusually for oscilloscopes, the ADC-42, ADC-100 and ADC-212 are 12 bit devices (4096 steps) which gives a theoretical maximum of 72dB of dynamic range. Unit Resolution Spectrum Range Dynamic Range ADC-216 16 B i t 166 kHz >95dB ADC-212 12 B i t 1500 kHz >80dB ADC-100 12 B i t 50 kHz >70dB ADC-42 12 B i t 10 kHz >65dB A D C - 200 8 Bi t 50 MHz >50dB Precision oscilloscopes in use Audio spectrum analysis Example using an 8 bit oscilloscope Example using a 12 bit oscilloscope The same signal captured with a 12 bit oscilloscope (ADC-212) looks the same in the normal scope view. The x50 view looks much better, the digitisation steps are only just visible. On the spectrum analyser, we still cannot see the 50Hz noise, but we know that there is at least an 80dB difference between the signal and the noise. Example using a 16 bit oscilloscope With 16 bit oscilloscopes (ADC216), the x50 trace is smooth, with no signs of distortion caused by the digitisation. The spectrum trace shows 50Hz noise (approx 86dB down) and also harmonics of 50Hz (at 150Hz and 250Hz). 9 Virtual Instrumentation An 8 bit oscilloscope gives a good visual representation of the wave. If however, you wish to ‘zoom’ in on the signal to magnify an area of interest, this soon shows up the limitations of an 8 bit oscilloscope. The signal contains 50 Hz noise due to mains pickup, but the 8 bit scope does not have enough resolution to detect it. An ideal CD player should have a flat frequency response over the whole audio spectrum. The specifications of a portable CD player stated a 20Hz to 20kHz response within 3dB. We tested this using a sinewave that sweeps from 0 to 20kHz. Plotting such a frequency response is not possible with many FFT spectrum analysers as they take several seconds processing and displaying the results. The result tends to be that only one frequency peak gets captured during the sweep. PicoScope is optimised for speed - even on a relatively slow PC the spectrum analyser has a near instantaneous ‘real time’ update rate. To display the frequency response as a single line rather than a moving peak, we used PicoScope’s peak detect function as shown below. As you can see, the -3dB point is not the 20kHz claimed by the data sheet, but is nearer 16kHz. Automotive Testing High Resolution Oscilloscopes for Automotive Diagnostics The Pico ADC-212 PC based oscilloscope / meter is our recommended product for automotive diagnostics and fault finding. It is ideal for viewing and testing most automotive signals and sensors including ABS, air flow, alternator, CAM & crank sensors, ignition, injector, starter current, TDC sensors etc. Many such examples are included in our library of waveforms. ▼ High resolution and precision Secondary Ignition Pickup ▼ Ideal for automotive fault finding ▼ 32k sample memory allows detail to be expanded ▼ Unlimited storage of waveforms & setups ▼ Advanced trigger modes capture intermittent faults ▼ Free software upgrades and technical support ▼ Oscilloscope and data logging software included Due to the high voltages involved in secondary ignition systems, it is not possible to make measurements by direct connection, attempting to make a direct connection will almost certainly damage the measuring instrument. The probe is a capacitive pickup which simply connects around the insulation of an ignition circuit component such as a plug wire, this avoids the need for direct connection. The ADC-212 has two features that set it apart from most oscilloscopes (both ‘automotive’ and ‘lab’ scopes), the first is resolution and the second is memory depth. The probe comes with a shielded 1.8m (6 foot) lead. It is suitable for use with conventional ignition systems and most HEI and DIS systems. Our library of Automotive Waveforms contains example waveforms captured using an ADC-212 and the ignition pickup. 600A AC/DC Current Clamp Virtual Instrumentation The current clamp is ideal for use with the ADC-212 to display starter current waveforms, charging currents and for performing quick compression tests. Unlike most digital storage oscilloscopes which typically have 8 bit vertical resolution and poor DC accuracy, the ADC-212 is accurate to 1% and has a 12 bit resolution. This gives a vertical resolution of 4000 ‘dots’ compared to the 100 or 200 of most automotive scopes. As well as its high vertical resolution, the ADC-212 has a large 32,000 reading waveform buffer. This combination makes it possible to capture complex signals and then expand areas of interest to show fine detail (see the library of automotive waveforms for examples of traces captured with the ADC-212). With the supplied PicoScope software, the ADC-212 can be used as both an oscilloscope and a spectrum analyser. Whilst applications for the oscilloscope (checking ABS, injector and ignition waveforms) are obvious, the spectrum analyser can prove a surpisingly useful automotive tool. It is ideal for setting up, testing and repairing car audio and with the addition of a vibration sensor it can help track down worn moving parts such as bearings without dismantling work. The current clamp can measure up to 600A (AC or DC). In use there is no need to break into the circuit or disturb the isolation as the opening jaws simply clamp around the current carrying conductor. No electrical contact is required. Cigar Lighter Power Lead In the workshop the ADC-212 is normally powered using the supplied mains adaptor. If however you want to use the ADC-212 (or any of our other high res scopes) on the move with a laptop, this handy lead allows you to power them from the car’s cigar lighter socket. The curled lead, when extended is over 3 meters in length so also allows the scopes to be used under the bonnet whilst taking power from the vehicle under test. Used with PicoLog software, they replace costly chart recorders and complicated ‘plug in’ data acquisition boards. These PC based instruments allow your computer to display and record voltages. By connecting suitable sensors, they can be used to measure temperature, pressure, humidity, light, resistance, current, power, speed, vibration... in fact, anything that you need to measure. ▼ Easy to install and use - up and running in minutes ▼ Supplied with PicoLog data logging software ▼ Parallel port products are also supplied with PicoScope virtual instrument software ▼ Low cost data acquisition systems Multiple views PicoLog displays data in a number of views, which can be activated as and when required. These views can be activated both during and after data collection. Recorder View Enables you to start or stop recording and specify recording files. It shows the current readings and alarm conditions for each channel. All settings such as scaling, channels and sampling are controlled from the recorder view. ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ XY graph view Displays one parameter against another. You can have more than one copy of PicoLog for Windows running at once, so you can use the player to analyse old data whilst recording new data. PicoLog can collect data from multiple converters at the same time. This not only allows a mix of voltage input units to be used on the same PC, but also allows other PC based instruments such as the TC-08 (temperature measurement) and the ADC-200 oscilloscope to be used at the same time. Exporting Data Data can easily be transferred (either as graphs or raw data) to other Windows applications by using the clipboard (copy and paste). Graphs can also be saved to disk (as Windows Metafiles) and data from the spreadsheet can be saved in text format. Current readings can be transferred using Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). PicoLog also supports IP networking so it is possible to transfer measurements from a remote site via an existing LAN, company network, or even over the Internet. 12 ○ ○ ○ ○ Acquisition PicoLog PicoLog is a powerful but flexible program for collecting, analysing and displaying data. The software can be used with our data acquisition products, virtual instruments (pages 4-9) and our temperature and humidity converters (pages 16-18). Some of the features of PicoLog are listed here. To see for yourself just how good it is, download a copy from our web site: www.picotech.com/download.html Graph View Graphs can be displayed both during and after data collection. Each channel can be displayed in its own graph or multiple channels can be displayed in the same graph. Axes can be setup manually, automatically or in chart recorder mode. Multipliers allow you to magnify areas of interest. Graphs can be ‘copied’ into the clipboard and then ‘pasted’ into reports. ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Player View Displays previously recorded data. It enables you to scroll quickly through stored files to compare results on successive runs. The player can be used to examine old data whilst new data is still being recorded. ○ Spreadsheet View Displays text data in a format that can be easily ‘copied and pasted’ into other applications. Data can also be saved to disk in standard ASCII text format. The ADC-16 together with PicoLog is an ideal tool for answering this question. This experiment requires the following equipment: • • • • • ADC-16 ADC-16 Terminal Board A selection of 1.5 volt (AA) batteries Battery holders to accommodate the batteries A load resistor for each battery For this example, a 10 Ohm load resistor was chosen; this provides a similar load to a flashlight. These resistors were soldered into the ADC-16 terminal board and the batteries in their holders were connected to channels 1 through 5. PicoLog recorder was setup to monitor and record the batteries as they discharge. As the experiment is set to last for several hours a low sample rate of just once per minute was selected. Each channel is given the name of the appropriate battery type. Once setup is complete the graph displays readings in volts of all five channels. When the record button is pressed, the data logging experiment begins. The battery discharge can be viewed in either graph format (below) or as a spreadsheet as the ADC-16 collects the data. Useful Features Parameter Scaling can be used to convert raw data into standard engineering units. A wide range of equation and table lookup scaling This note is abbreviated. The full version of this application note, options are provided. and many others can be found on our web site www.picotech.com/applications.html Additional parameters can be calculated, for example to calculate power output from a boiler you may need to multiply a flow reading from one channel with the temperature difference between two further channels. Alarm Limits can be set for each channel to alert the user should a parameter go out of a specified range. IP Networking enables remote data collection from Pico’s full range of data aquisition products. 13 Data Acquisition ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ▼ ADC-10 ADC-11 Single Channel, Low Cost 11 Channels ▼ Lowest cost data logger ▼ No power supply required ▼ Compact design ▼ Data logging and oscilloscope software included Data Acquisition The ADC-10 is a low cost unit that provides your PC with a single analog input. Rather than relying on voltage references (which tend to be temperature sensitive) it uses ‘reference’ resistors which are extremely stable (low temperature co-efficient and drift). The exact value of each resistor is stored in a EEPROM memory to provide the ultimate in accuracy (yearly re-calibation is recommended). To achieve the 0.001°C resolution, a state of the art ADC is used that can resolve to better than 1 part in 16 million. Temperature Temperature & Humidity No power supply required The PT-104 measures temperature using platinum resistance thermometers (PRT’s). Both common industry standards (PT100 and PT1000) are supported. The unit is compatible with 2,3 and 4 wire sensors. Resistance In resistance mode, the unit uses a four-wire circuit to give the greatest possible accuracy. Two resistance ranges are available (0 to 375 ohms and 0 to 10,000 ohms). The unit is calibrated for 0 to 375 ohms, so this range should be used for accurate measurements. It is made up of a number of separate modules: you simply choose the modules that you need to do the job. There are four main sections to the system: ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ Converter Logger Converters Sensors Alarms Alarm Logger Sensor The network is a four-wire cable that carries power and data between the logger, converters and optional equipment like remote alarms. The logger can be attached anywhere along the network cable. The system offers these important benefits: For most applications, low cost telephone style cable is used. This allows operation with 400 metres of network cable between the logger and the furthest sensor. With thicker cable, this distance can be increased to a kilometre or more. ▼ ▼ ▼ Cables can be purchased in standard lengths, alternatively you can make up your own, using the crimp tool to attach connectors to the cable. ▼ ▼ 22 It carries out routine measurements automatically, leaving staff to get on with their job It sounds an alarm when there is a problem: if there is no alarm, no action is required It maintains a permanent record of measurements, so that you can prove compliance with appropriate legislation It provides timely warnings of equipment failure, minimising the risk of spoiled stock It is easy to install and use EnviroMon Loggers EL005 logger At the core of the EnviroMon system is the logger, which stores readings taken at intervals from one minute to four hours and sounds an alarm should a problem arise. The logger can send detailed or summary reports directly to a printer at specified intervals, or transfer data to a computer for long term storage and graphical analysis. The logger contains back-up batteries so that it continues recording if the mains power fails. The EL005 logger has no display or buttons, and so must be connected to a computer or printer to view the data. The EL005 has a larger memory than the EL008 (250,000 samples compared to 15,000) and long life internal rechargeable batteries. This combination makes it ideal for recording data over long periods of time. The EL005 does not have an internal alarm: the EL006 can be used if required. EL008 logger The EL005 logger has internal rechargeable batteries. These batteries are kept topped up whilst mains power is available, and will keep the system running for up to 72 hours during a mains power failure. The EL018 dialer adapter / battery backup can provide power to the system for much longer periods in the event of mains failure. Data from the EL008 can be collected then downloaded to a computer, alternatively it can be used as a stand alone data logger. If used as a stand-alone logger, the EL008 needs to be connected to a computer (via the serial port) during the installation and set up process. However, once the system is operational, you can disconnect the computer and control the logger using the built in buttons and display. If the logger is connected to a computer, there are many more functions available to you. The display on the logger will continuously cycle through each of the sensors, displaying the name and reading, followed by the date and time. It is possible to hold the display on a particular sensor. The display will then show only the reading for that location. A remote PC can call up the logger to download data into EnviroMon for Windows by using the EL033 modem adaptor to connect the logger to a modem. (The PC must also be connnected to a modem.) Remote data logging EnviroMon for Windows supports IP networking. This enables data collected by the EnviroMon to be accessed from a computer at a remote site via an existing LAN, company network, or even over the Internet. You might, for example, wish to monitor environmental conditions in a remote computer room or mobile phone base station. In addition, remote access through IP is also appealing to those employing the Linux operating system. The EL005 features GSM support. This is ideal for mobile data logging and remote sites - it can also be used to send text messages using GSM’s short message system (SMS) to any phone. EnviroMon, Pico Technology’s software for its standalone data logging products, features Internet Protocol (IP) networking capability. In addition, PicoLog (software for PCs used in data-logging applications) is also IP capable - enabling remote data collection from the company’s full range of data acquisition products. It is supplied as standard with a 5m cable, other lengths can be supplied on request. EL019 Telephone Autodialer The dialler can be programmed with a list of emergency telephone numbers. When there is a problem, the dialler calls each of the telephone numbers in turn until someone answers, then it gives a recorded message detailing the problem. EL033 Modem Adaptor The modem adaptor connects the EnviroMon to a modem so that a remote computer can call up to download data. EL006 Remote Audio Alarm The remote alarm (65 dB) will sound if any sensor goes out of range. Multiple alarms can be connected to the network at any point. EL011 Alarm Relay 24 The alarm relay turns on or off an electrical circuit when an alarm occurs. This could, for example, control a warning lamp or siren. The unit can control mains equipment. Signal conditioners The EL036 adaptor accepts up to two Pico signal conditioner units. This enables connection to a wide range of sensors including: pressure, current, resistance, load and air flow, making the measurement possibilities of the EnviroMon near endless. The conditioners provide power or excitation and amplify the sensor output. One or more signal conditioners can be plugged, via an adaptor, into either an EnviroMon stand alone data logger or an ADC-16 PC based converter. The data logging software will then automatically detect which signal conditioning module is connected and scale the measurements into the correct units. For example, if a PT100 temperature conditioner is connected, data will be displayed and recorded in oC. If a current clamp is connected then readings will be in Amps. Using signal conditioners To data Signal conditioners can also be plugged into a general purpose adaptor which provides outputs from standard BNC connectors so that sensors can be interfaced to oscilloscopes, multimeters, data acquisition products and chart recorders. To sensors logger The CM001 accepts two signal conditioners Monitoring energy efficiency in the home The temperature sensor on the hot water tank showed up an immediate problem. The water heating is controlled by both a thermostat and time clock. The clock was set to start heating at 2am and finish at 8am. The red trace shows the heating of the water. The peak in mains power consumption (blue trace, approx 2am) shows when the heating starts, by 3:45 the water is hot and the thermostat cuts the heater out. The hot water however is not required until 6am, so for over 2 hours the water cools slowly, dropping in temperature by 8%. This represents wasted energy. The rapid temperature drop suggests that the insulation of the water tank could be improved, but an instant improvement can be made by changing the time clock settings. Signal conditioning Pico products can be used for monitoring energy efficiency both for environmental reasons and also for cost savings. The methods and equipment used are equally suitable for studying energy use in office or industrial applications. Using Pico signal conditioning products, a three bedroom house was wired up with sensors for temperature, humidity, light levels and electrical power consumption. All the sensors were then connected to an EnviroMon data logger. The EnviroMon network cable enabled easy connection of all the sensors to the single data logger. Data from the logger was remotely downloaded to a computer using a telephone modem, so that several locations could be monitored without regular site visits. With the aid of the data logger we can see that the water takes 1 hour 45 min to heat from cold. The time clock was reset to start at 4:15am and as expected the water was hot by 6am. Water Heating The trace opposite shows readings from three of the temperature sensors in the house and also the overall electric power consumption of the house. The mains power (in kW) shows a big jump when the electric storage heaters turn on and a second jump caused by the electric water heater. 26 Standby power Monitoring of the house showed that electric power consumption never dropped below 150W even with all lights and the refrigerator turned off. The main culprits were devices with remote controls left on ‘standby’ such as the television, video and hi-fi. In particular the television drew nearly 20W in standby mode. Some badly designed products use almost the same amount of power in standby as in normal operation. Another cause of power wastage was mains power adaptors. These small DC power supplies commonly used around the house (for phone chargers, electronic games, computer modems, answer phones, clock radios etc) all use a few watts when plugged in, even if they are not supplying any power. Over the course of a year this adds up to a considerable waste of power (over 1000kWH). Conditioners CM004 Temperature (PT100) CM007 4-20 mA Current Loop (Powered) The CM004 platinum resistance signal conditioner works with standard 2, 3 or 4 wire sensors. It provides high accuracy, high stability temperature measurement over a wide range. The CM007 works with two-wire transmitters that produce a 420mA output.
