Technical Note – Remote access of IPm through BT‐6000 series cell Abstract: This procedure explains how to access any Sixnet IPm remotely through a BT‐6000 cellular modem connected to a cellular network (GSM and CDMA). The I2Gold APN with static IP address is used with the GSM modems. The typical data only plan with static IP addresses is used with the CDMA modems. Using Sixnet I/O Tool Kit software this technical note will describe how to request and gather datalog information, configuration loads and Test I/O. Software Used: ∙ Sixnet I/O Tool Kit version 3.47 ∙ BlueVue Device Manager version 1.7.8 ∙ Operating System: Windows® XP SP2 ∙ IPm firmware version 4.2.1004 or above Hardware Used: ∙ (1) BT‐6000 series (BT‐64x1, BT‐66x1, BT‐68x1) cellular modem ∙ (1) VT‐IPM‐1410 (any IPm can be used) ∙ (1) Linksys Router (not required for application) Cables Used: • Crossover Ethernet cable to connect IPm to BT‐6000 cellular modem • Straight through Ethernet cable to connect PC to Router Outline: Configuration overview 2 Setup procedure for the IPm 3 Setup procedure for the BT‐6000 cellular modem 4 Setup procedure for the Linksys router 5 Setup procedure for the PC 5 Initiating communication from the PC (Host communication) 6 Receiving data from the IPm (Client communication) 6 Configuration overview: The Diagram below defines the connection necessary to communicate to the VT‐IPM‐1410 via IP and RS232 connections. The configuration procedures below will define how to configure the components below to initiate communication from the PC and the IPms. It is most logical to show the configuration from the remote site first, so the IPm configuration will be shown first, followed by the modem, router then PC. In the Tool Kit configuration window under the Ports tab configure the IP address. In this case 192.168.0.100 was used. 2. In the Advanced button in the Ethernet configuration set the subnet mask and default gateway to match the IP4000 modem. In this case 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.0.1 was used. 3. Optionally, client transfers can be used to push unsolicited datalog information to a server. To configure this go to the Sixlog configuration window. In the Client Transfer tab set the Destination IP address to match the WAN IP of the Router. Set the IP port number to 11500 and UDP to match the port forwarding settings in the router and modem. Under the General tab add your name for the EVDO modem. In this case “BT Modem” was used. 2. Under the LAN IP tab configure the Modem IP and Subnet Mask according to your setup. In this case it is 192.168.0.11 and 255.255.255.0 are set respectively. 3. Disable DHCP. 4. Under the Port Forwarding/DMZ tab configure the IP address of your IPm and the port numbers used. Port 1594 is used for standard Sixnet protocol used during loading and Host Transfers. Port 11500 is the port we will use to do the datalog Client Transfers, but any port above 10000 can be used. 5. In the WAN configuration page the connection settings should be sent so the modem can properly connect to the wireless network and get an IP address. 6. The Dial String field is dependant on the carrier used. Enter the number specified by the service provider for Verizon it is typically #777 for AT&T it is typically *99***1#. 7. Leave the User Name and Password fields blank. For modems on the GSM network enter i2gold in the APN field. 8. Select Always On so the modem will have a constant connection to the cell network. Any router will work in this application. 1. If you are using the router as a DHCP Server configure it to assign the same IP address to the PC every time. This can be configured in the Setup tab of the Linksys router. 2. Configure the port forwarding to accept the port numbers that will be used by the IPm. In the Application and Gaming tab add ports 1594 and 11500 to get forwarded to the IP address of the PC. In this case 192.168.0.191 was used. Setup Procedure for the PC: This Procedure explains how to configure the PC and Sixnet software to communicate to the IPm connected to the remote EVDO modem. 1. The only configuration that needs to be done on the PC should be the method in which in obtains it’s IP address. Go to Control Panel Æ Network Connections. Go to the Properties window of the PC’s network interface card. Select the TCP/IP Properties window and select Obtain an IP address automatically. Any software that is going to access the IPm should use the WAN IP address of the EVDO modem and the port numbers that are used in Sixnet communication. 2. To configure the Sixnet I/O Tool Kit to talk to the modem go to DeviceÆSelect in the main window of the Sixnet I/O Tool Kit. 3. Specify the IP address of the WAN IP of the Remote Modem. In this case it is 74.70.152.67. 4. When communication is initiated, such as Test I/O or Loading from the Sixnet I/O Tool Kit it will use port number 1594 UDP/IP communication. Receiving data from the IPm: This section describes how to configure your software to accept data initiated from the IPm. This generally is datalog Client Transfer data. 1. Open the Sixnet datalog server. 2. Configure the datalog server to accept incoming messages from the IPm at the specified port number. In this case UDP/IP port 11500 was used. 3. Start the datalog server. The datalog information will start to come in within the specified fixed transfer rate.
