The CTS Series 120 integrated pointing stick module uses a resistive strain gage sensor to
convert analog input into PS/2 output. The function of the CTS Series 120 TrackPak™
integrated pointing device module is to measure force applied to the top of the pointing
stick’s rubber cap by a user’s finger, process the input, and output a mouse signal to the host
computer. The Series 120 TrackPak™ assembly uses the CTS’ patented ceramic pointing
device sensor as its user interface.
CTS SERIES 120 SPECIFICATION 1843-40
1.
SENSOR CHARACTERISTICS
1.1. The sensor has a ceramic post with mutually perpendicular X, Y, and Z axes, with the origin
located at a point along the stick axis 1 mm below the top of the rubber cap.
1.2. All forces are assumed to be true force vectors (no torques).
1.3. For axes polarity reference:
1.3.1. X Positive – to the right of keyboard
1.3.2. Y Positive – to the top of keyboard (away from user)
1.3.3. Z Negative – down into the keyboard
2.
WORKING RANGE
2.1.1. XY Working Range – 0 grams to 320 grams
2.1.2. Z Working Range – 0 grams to 500 grams
3.
HORIZONTAL OUTPUT
3.1.1. A horizontal (X/Y) force between 10g and 320g applied to the pointing stick will
result in a horizontal output of 1 count per 0.8 grams of applied force.
3.1.2. The positive X-axis shall lie within 10° of the direction to the right along the line of
the keys.

VERTICAL OUTPUT
4.1.1. A 500-gram vertical force applied uniformly to the top of the rubber cap will result in a
target Z output of 50 counts.
4.1.2. The positive Z-axis shall lie within 10° of the normal to the place of the keyboard.
5.
DYNAMIC RESPONSE
5.1.1. In response to an instantaneous change in force within the working range an output
shall reach within 2 counts of its final value within .2 seconds.
5.1.2. In response to an instantaneous change in force within the working range an output
shall reach within 1 count of its final value within .5 seconds.
5.1.3. Outputs shall not overshoot by more than 1 count at any time.
ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS
6.
SUPPLY VOLTAGE REQUIREMENTS
6.1.1. Vcc = 5VDC ± 10%
6.1.2. Vss = 0V
6.1.3. Peak to peak differential noise and ripple on +5V line shall be less than 100 mV.
6.1.4. At power on/off the TrackPak™ shall withstand a voltage overshoot of Vcc + 30% or
a voltage undershoot of Vss - .5V.
7.
POWER CONSUMPTION REQUIREMENTS
7.1.1. Current drain is typically <3mA.
MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS
8.
OVERLOAD
8.1. Horizontal Overload
8.1.1. The pointing device shall withstand a 4.0 ± .1 Kg horizontal load applied
perpendicular to each face of the ceramic post at a location within .5 mm of the top of

the ceramic post. All physical and electrical specifications shall be met after horizontal
overload.
8.2. Vertical Overload
8.2.1. The pointing device shall withstand a 20 Kg vertical load applied to the top of the
rubber cap parallel to the axis of the ceramic post. All physical and electrical
specifications shall be met after vertical overload.
9.
LIFE
9.1. Horizontal Life
9.1.1. The TrackPak™ assembly shall withstand 10,000,000 cycles of horizontal deflection at
a peak force of 250 Grams applied to the top of the pointing stick, perpendicular to
the axis of the ceramic post. The radial angle of the load shall be varied continuously
by a rotating arm. One cycle consists of 360° rotation at a speed of 3000 revolutions
per minute. All physical and electrical specifications shall be met after horizontal cycle
life testing.
9.2. Vertical Life
9.2.1. The TrackPak™ assembly shall withstand 10,000,000 cycles of vertical deflection at a
peak force of 400 grams applied to the top of the pointing stick parallel to the axis of
the ceramic post. One cycle consists of zero grams applied ramping to 400 grams peak
and back down to zero grams. All physical and electrical specifications shall be met
after vertical cycle life testing.
10. VIBRATION AND SHOCK
10.1.1. The TrackPak™ assembly shall withstand a 20 gram, 10Hz – 20Hz, vibration for a
duration of four hours in each plane.
10.1.2. The TrackPak™ assembly shall withstand three 100 gram, 1 millisecond, shocks in
each plane.

15. ESD RESISTANCE REFERENCE SPECIFICATION
This ESD reference specification is based on testing conducted by CTS to IEC specification
61000-4-2 and was conducted in an environment simulating proper installation in a
keyboard. CTS recommends additional customer testing as application construction and
environments may differ.
