This product has a surge capability of 500 Watts PPP per line for an 8/20µs waveshape and offers ESD protection > 40kV. DIFFERENTIAL MODE CONFIGURATION (Figure 1) The PLC496 is designed to protect one bidirectional line where the normal signal voltage is both positive and negative. Figure 1 shows a typical differential mode line to line) I/O port protection circuit application. Pins 1, 4 5 and 8 are connected to the data lines while Pins 2, 3, 7 and 6 are not connected. Figure 2, a typical common mode (line to ground) sensor circuit applications, shows pins 1 and 8 of the TVS connected to the line and pins 4 and 5 connected to ground, no connections to pins 2, 3, 6, and 7. CIRCUIT BOARD LAYOUT RECOMMENDATIONS Circuit board layout is critical for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) protection. The following guidelines are recommended: ✔ ✔ The protection device should be placed near the input terminals or connectors, the device will divert the transient current immediately before it can be coupled into the nearby traces. The path length between the TVS device and the protected line should be minimized. ✔ All conductive loops including power and ground loops should be minimized. ✔ The transient current return path to ground should be kept as short as possible to reduce parasitic inductance. ✔ Figure 2. Typical Common Mode Sensor Protection Circuit SENSOR Ground planes should be used whenever possible. For multilayer PCBs, use ground vias. 05109.R4 7/02 LINE 2 OUT LINE 2 IN 4 1 8 NC 2 7 NC NC 3 6 NC 4 5 1 8 NC 2 7 NC NC 3 6 NC 4 5 CIRCUITRY www.protekdevices.com PLC496 PACKAGE OUTLINE & DIMENSIONS PACKAGE OUTLINE SO-8 -A- 8 5 -B- 0.010” (0.25 MM) P M B M 4 PL 1 PACKAGE DIMENSIONS 4 DIM D G C R X 45º 0º - 10º -TJ K 0.010” (0.25 MM) M T B S F A S 8 PL MOUNTING PAD 4.80 3.80 1.35 0.35 0.40 1.27 BSC 0.18 0.10 5.80 0.25 INCHES MIN MAX 5.00 0.189 0.196 4.00 0.150 0.157 1.75 0.054 0.068 0.49 0.014 0.019 1.250 0.016 0.049 1.27 BSC 0.05 BSC 0.05 BSC 0.25 0.007 0.009 0.25 0.004 0.008 6.20 0.229 0.244 0.50 0.010 0.019 NOTES: 1. - T - = Seating Plane and Datum Surface. 2.
