Philips Semiconductors Linear Products Product specification Current-mode PWM controller UC3842 DESCRIPTION PIN CONFIGURATIONS The UC3842 is available in an 8-Pin mini-DIP the necessary features to implement off-line, fixed-frequency current-mode control schemes with a minimal external parts count. This technique results in improved line regulation, enhanced load response characteristics, and a simpler, easier to design control loop. Topological advantages include inherent pulse-by-pulse current limiting. N Package Protection circuitry includes built-in undervoltage lock-out and current limiting. Other features include fully-latched operation, a 1% trimmed bandgap reference, and start-up current less than 1mA. COMP 1 8 VREF VFB 2 7 VCC ISENSE 3 6 OUTPUT RT/CT 4 5 GROUND TOP VIEW These devices feature a totem-pole output designed to source and sink high peak current from a capacitive load, such as the gate of a power MOSFET. Consistent with N-channel power devices, the output is low in the OFF-state. Timing and bypass capacitors should be connected close to Pin 5 in a single point ground. The transistor and 5k potentiometer are used to sample the oscillator waveform and apply an adjustable ramp to Pin 3. SHUTDOWN TECHNIQUES 4.7k 8 1 COMP 3 4.7k SHUTDOWN ISENSE 500 SHUTDOWN TO CURRENT SENSE RESISTOR NOTE: Shutdown of the UC3842 can be accomplished by two methods; either raise Pin 3 above 1V or pull Pin 1 below a voltage two diode drops above ground. Either method causes the output of the PWM comparator to be high (refer to Block Diagram). The PWM latch is reset dominant so that the output will remain low until the next clock cycle after the shutdown condition at Pins 1 and/or 3 is removed. In the examples shown, an externally-latched shutdown may be accomplished by adding an SCR which will be reset by cycling VCC below the lower UVLO threshold (10V). At this point all internal bias is removed, allowing the SCR to reset. Load regulation is therefore dependent on the coupling between secondary and control windings, and on transformer leakage inductance. For applications requiring better load regulation, a UC1901 Isolated Feedback Generator can be used to directly sense the output voltage. 90VAC to 130VAC Input frequency: 50 or 60Hz Switching frequency: 40kHz±10% Output power: 25W maximum Output voltage: 5V±5% Output current: 2 to 5A Line regulation: 0.01%/V Load regulation: 8%/A* Efficiency @ 25 W, VIN=90VAC: 70% VIN=130VAC: 65% Output short-circuit current: August 31, 1994 2.5A average 1106 Philips Semiconductors Linear Products Product specification Current-mode PWM controller UC3842 SYNCHRONIZATION AND MAXIMUM DUTY CYCLE CLAMP 5V VCC 4 RA 8 RESET 7 VCC 7 DISCH RB NE555 OUT 3 RT/CT 4 UC3842 2 TRIG 6 THRESH 5 GND GND C 1 NOTES: TO OTHER UC3842s 1.44 f + (R A ) 2R B) C D MAX August 31, 1994 + RB RA ) 2R B 1107
