Agilent B2901/02/11/12A Precision Source/Measure Unit How to make a resistance measurement This material shows how to perform a resistance measurement through an example. Figure 1 illustrates the connection and condition supposed in the example of measuring resistor using the B2901/02/11/12A. B2901/02/11/12A A V High Force DUT - Low Force Figure 1. Connection and condition supposed in the example Figure 2 shows the timing chart for the single point measurement with the front panel operation. In this case, the specified source value is sourced immediately after turning on . Then, when you press , the instrument will make a single point measurement. If it is necessary, you can specify any measurement trigger delay time which is the wait time after pressing and before making a measurement. The measurement time consists of Measurement Speed and some overhead time. Measurement Speed is the parameter specified by the user. Overhead time includes the time to change the measurement range, etc. V or I Measurement Trigger Delay Time Measurement Time Source Value Output Off State Output ON Trigger Time :Measurement Figure 2. Timing chart for the single point measurement The resistance measurement operation is set to OFF in the default setting. To perform resistance measurement, you need to select the operation among AUTO, FIXED and V/I. For AUTO and FIXED, the B2901/02/11/12A performs resistance measurement by using the current source and voltage measure condition automatically set by the resistance measurement range setting. However, any measurement trigger delay time can’t be specified. For V/I, the B2901/02/11/12A performs measurement by using the present source/measure condition and calculates the resistance value. The measurement trigger delay time is effective with V/I operation. Agilent B2901/02/11/12A Precision Source/Measure Unit Performing a resistance measurement with AUTO or FIXED operation Step 1. Rotate select to select the resistance measurement operation, and then press to set the resistance measurement operation to AUTO. (1) Rotate and press to select Resistance Measurement Operation Step 2. Press Step 3. Press to edit it. Then (2) Press AUTO to source the current. to perform a measurement. Now you can see the measurement result on the GUI of the B2901/02/11/12A as bellow. If you’d like to use FIXED resistance measurement range operation, take the following steps. Step 4. Press to edit the resistance measurement operation, and then select (1) Press (2) Press FIXED to set it to FIXED. Agilent B2901/02/11/12A Precision Source/Measure Unit Step 5. Rotate to select the resistance measurement range, and then press to set the resistance measurement range to 2 kOhm. (1) Rotate and press to select Resistance Measurement Range Press to perform a measurement, again. (2) Press 2kΩ to edit it. Then select Agilent B2901/02/11/12A Precision Source/Measure Unit Performing a resistance measurement with V/I operation Step 1. Rotate to select the resistance measurement operation and press to edit it. Then press to set the resistance measurement operation to V/I. (1) Rotate and press to select Resistance Measurement Operation Step 2. Press (If , then press to set Channel 1 V/I Source Function to I Source. can’t be found on the Assist keys, press (1) Press Mode Step 3. Press Press to change the keys.) (2) Press AMPS (I) and set Channel 1 Source Value to 1 mA. (1) Press Source Step 4. (2) Press V/I (2) Enter Source Value and set Channel 1 Limit value to 2 V. (1) Press Limit (2) Enter Limit Value Agilent B2901/02/11/12A Precision Source/Measure Unit Step 6. Press Step 7. Press to source the current. to perform a measurement. Now you can see the measurement result on the GUI of the B2901/02/11/12A as bellow. If you specify V/I operation for a resistance measurement, the B2901/02/11/12A performs measurement by using the present source/measure condition and calculates the resistance value. You can see the parameters in Range Sub-Panel which configure the measurement range setting. In the default setting, the B2901/02/11/12A performs the voltage measurement using 200 mV voltage minimum measurement range with AUTO range operation. With AUTO range operation, the B2901/02/11/12A selects the proper range for the measurement with specified minimum measurement range so that you don’t need to take care about it. To know how to change the measurement range setting, try to configure to use 2 V voltage minimum measurement range with AUTO operation. Step 8. Rotate to select the voltage minimum measurement range and press to set the voltage minimum measurement range to 2 V. (1) Rotate and press to select Voltage Minimum Measurement Range (2) Press 2V to edit it. Then select Agilent B2901/02/11/12A Precision Source/Measure Unit If you’d like to fix the measurement range, you can select FIXED range operation as below. Step 9. Rotate Select to select the voltage measurement range operation, and then press to edit it. Then to configure the voltage measurement range operation to FIXED. (1) Rotate and press to select Voltage Measurement Range Operation (2) Press FIXED When V/I operation is specified, the measurement trigger delay time is effective. If you’d like to specify the measurement trigger delay time, take the following steps. Step 10. Press to change the assist keys to show (1) Press More.... Step 11. Press to edit the trigger type, and then select (1) Press , and then press . (2) Press Show Trigger to configure the trigger type to MANUAL. (2) Press MANUAL Agilent B2901/02/11/12A Precision Source/Measure Unit Step 12. Rotate to select the measurement trigger delay time and press to edit it. Then enter 200 ms to set the measurement trigger delay time to 200 ms. (1) Rotate and press to select Measurement Trigger Delay Time (2) Enter Measurement Trigger Delay Time Optional set up for more flexible measurement In the default setting, the instrument selects the appropriate measurement speed automatically to get the fine accuracy. However, you can also specify the measurement speed on the GUI of the B2901/02/11/12A to meet a variety of the requirement to the measurement conditions. For example, let’s try to change the measurement speed to NORMAL to make a measurement more carefully. If you select NORMAL, the aperture time is set to 1 PLC. Here, PLC stands for power line cycle and the specified number of power line cycles is used per a measurement. Step 1. Press speed to NORMAL to edit the measurement speed, and then select (1) Press Speed to configure the measurement (2) Press NORMAL
