SX8120EVK Evaluation Kit for SX8120 1V Motor/LED Control ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS & SENSING USER GUIDE SX8120EVK USER GUIDE Evaluation Kit for SX8120 1V Motor/LED Control Description Features The SX8120EVK is a platform for rapid prototyping of ultra low power timer applications. It consists of a single board with the SX8120, world’s first true 1V motor driver with LED controller, and some peripherals like a miniature vibration motor, red (1.7V) and blue (3.4V) SMD LED. The evaluation kit allows designers to set motor polarity and send a burst to control a LED or boost a command voltage. One SX8120 output goes low when VDD is higher than the full charge voltage of an NiMH cell to control a minimal charger. The device also controls its IO state starting at 0.6V to facilitate power-up. The EVK is designed to provide a working demonstration of the SX8120ISTRT including a miniature motor-vibror and SMD LEDs. This guide contains information relating to the usage of the EVK and should be used in conjunction with the datasheet for the device. The datasheet contains detailed information including the electrical characteristics and the detailed features of the device. This guide can be used to familiarize the user with the features of the device and for testing electrical characteristics of particular interest to the user. The tool gives also the user the possibility to develop his application by interfacing his own peripherals/ systems, choosing its external power supply, finding the best configuration parameters or mounting and supplying components on different prototype areas. SX8120EVK Overview 3.1 Critical and Non-Critical Components The bill of materials includes many non-critical components that are useful for evaluation purposes. The critical component necessary for design-in is the decoupling capacitor C1 shown in Figure 1 close to the SX8120ISTRT device. ACS - Revision 1.0 © Semtech Corp. Figure 2. Board battery powering with JP2 jumper The JP2 jumper allow also to measure the board or chip power consumption. For chip power consumption meausring, the JP3 and JP1 jumpers must be unplugged to disconnect the MOTOR and LED booster loads. ACS - Revision 1.0 © Semtech Corp. October 2010 Page 5 www.semtech.com/products/ SX8120EVK Evaluation Kit for SX8120 1V Motor/LED Control ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS & SENSING 5 Inputs 5.1 Timeout USER GUIDE The SX8120 TO pin is connected to the TIMEOUT switch and allow to select a preset time-out of 15 sec or 30 sec. 5.2 Start Button The SX8120 BUTTON pin is connected to the START push-button. The SX8120 MOTOR and LED pins goes active on the press of the START button. The output goes back to sleep on the next button press or after the a preset time-out ( Section 5.1 ). 5.3 Polarity The SX8120 MOTOR output polarity is controlled by the POLARITY input. If POLARITY is connected the VDD that the MOTOR will be active high, if POLARITY is connected the VSS, the MOTOR will be active low. Table 1. Motor output on the SX8120EVK 7 LED booster interface When the SX8120 is active, the LED pin sends a 43kHz burst to control a LED or boost a command voltage. October 2010 Page 7 www.semtech.com/products/ SX8120EVK Evaluation Kit for SX8120 1V Motor/LED Control ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS & SENSING 7.1 USER GUIDE NiMH pin Pin NIMH goes high when VDD is below the NIMH threshold of 1.41V and low when VDD is above the same threshold. A 30mV hysteresis allow to remove NiMH pin oscillation when the VDD voltage is near the threshold. The supply voltage on VDD pin is checked at a 1Hz rate, so the NiMH pin can switch with a delay of 1 seconds max. 8 Pin access and prototype areas The EVK features prototype areas, which allows custom interfacing with the SX8120 I/O and power lines to other circuitry in support of system evaluation.
